50 years - a journey full of love

On the morning of November 12, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi held a ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Han Nom Department.

In the warm and solemn atmosphere of the Anniversary Ceremony, the Department of Han Nom was honored to welcome Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dac Vinh (Member of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee for Culture and Education), Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Kim Son (Minister of Education and Training), Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien (Vice President and General Secretary of the Executive Council of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha); Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hieu (Vice President of Vietnam National University, Hanoi), along with distinguished guests representing agencies, research institutes, universities; veteran cadres and lecturers; nearly 400 alumni and students of all courses who have studied and are studying at the school.
On behalf of the staff, lecturers, students and pupils studying at the Department of Han Nom, Dr. Dinh Thanh Hieu (Head of the Department of Han Nom) in his speech reviewed the 50-year process of formation and development of the industry, expressing pride in the mission of the Han Nom industry, which is to train a team of people working in Han Nom who are both proficient in Han and Nom characters, and have a firm grasp of modern specialized and interdisciplinary Han Nom research methods; capable of exploiting and introducing the values of traditional culture, directly contributing to ensuring cultural continuity between tradition and modernity. The anniversary is an opportunity for teachers and students to look back at the achievements of the industry, which are very remarkable, very proud and have a basis to believe in the future prospects of the industry, but also need to recognize the shortcomings and challenges of the industry in the new context and conditions, to strive, continue to develop the industry to be worthy of the trust of society and the merits of previous generations. It can be said that with the solid roots of thousands of years of knowledge of our ancestors, the achievements of 50 years of construction and growth, along with the attention and favor of leaders at all levels, the dedication of teachers and the respect of generations of students, the Han Nom industry of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities will develop more and more.

Dr. Dinh Thanh Hieu (Head of Han Nom Department) was very moved to witness the attention of many leaders, teachers, alumni and students of the School to join in the celebration of the Department's founding anniversary.

Dr. Dinh Thanh Hieu, on behalf of the Department of Han Nom, presented calligraphy (made by the Department's teachers and students) to the School.

Representing the School's Board of Directors, Principal Hoang Anh Tuan shared: At the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, we are aware that Han Nom is one of the "special" majors of the School. We are proud of and cherish the achievements we have built over the past half century and determine that: Developing this major, bringing it closer to contemporary social life to contribute to connecting traditional cultural values with modern people, is not only a responsibility from the perspective of the School's training management, but above all, it also demonstrates the national responsibility of a leading training unit in the field of social sciences and humanities in the country.

Principal Hoang Anh Tuan affirmed that the School will always pay attention and make appropriate investments so that the Han Nom industry can continue to maintain and successfully complete its mission of being a pioneer in the system of training and research facilities on Han Nom in Vietnam.

As one of the veteran teachers, the generation that opened the Han Nom major at the University of General Sciences, when sharing at the Anniversary Ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Thinh expressed his joy at the development of the major and the maturity of generations of lecturers and those doing Han Nom research today. He also hopes that in the future, the Han Nom Department will grow even stronger, and the number of students registering to study this major will increase even more. And after graduating from this school, students can participate in collecting, researching, translating, and spreading the thousands of years of cultural values of their ancestors hidden in the massive Han Nom treasure currently stored in Vietnam and many places around the world.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Thinh (former head of the Department of Han Nom) expressed his belief and expectation in the development of the industry with the spirit of "Han Nom Culture".

Dr. Dinh Thanh Hieu presented a bouquet of fresh flowers as a thank you to Mr. Nguyen Van Thinh and veteran teachers who have worked hard to foster the achievements of the Han Nom industry over the past 50 years.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Nguyen Kim Son expressed his joy at returning to the Humanities, returning to the department where he had studied, taught and worked for many years. The Minister also congratulated the achievements that the Han Nom industry has achieved during the half-century of formation and development, and emphasized the "special" role of the special science - Han Nom industry. Because this is the industry that trains and researches the massive heritage of memories, the beautiful cultural values that have been forged for thousands of years by our ancestors, the cultural bridge between the past and the present. Therefore, there needs to be a strategic vision, an appropriate investment for the development of Han Nom industry, not only for the industry itself, not for the people working in this industry, but for the cause of building and developing the culture of the nation.

The Board of Directors of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Literature presented gifts and took souvenir photos with leaders and veteran teachers.

Also at the Ceremony, the Department of Han Nom, Faculty of Literature received a Certificate of Merit from the Director of Hanoi National University for its achievements in training and research.

On behalf of the school's alumni, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Tuan Cuong (Director of the Institute of Han Nom Studies) emotionally shared: Choosing to study and then work in the Han Nom field for me is like a "predestined relationship". At the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, we are not only taught valuable lessons, profound academic knowledge, experience, scientific research methods, but also a spirit of dedication, kindness and lessons about humanity. We are always proud to have been taught Han Nom knowledge, and to be inspired to deepen our thinking by generations of teachers at this school.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tuan Cuong (former student of K44, currently Director of the Institute of Han Nom Studies) shared: generations of Han Nom students over the past half century have "sought teachers and learned from them", pursued their studies with a passion for classical knowledge to promote its value in contemporary society.

On the occasion of the Anniversary, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities also awarded 5 scholarships from the Talent Attraction Scholarship for basic science majors to students of K67 (just enrolled).

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong awarded the Talent Attraction Scholarship to newly enrolled students of the 67th class of Han Nom major. This is the first academic year that Hanoi National University has applied this Scholarship to support and create conditions for the development of basic sciences.

The journey of the past 50 years is also a solid foundation for teachers and students of the Han Nom Department of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to continue on the path towards the future, achieving more success, affirming the leading position in training human resources in the Han Nom Department in the whole country.

The Han Nom major of Vietnamese universities was established at the Faculty of Philology - Hanoi University of Science (now the Faculty of Literature - University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi) in 1972, when the resistance war against the US entered its fiercest stage, with the mission of training a team of people working in collecting, preserving, researching, translating, exploiting Han Nom heritage, preserving and promoting the cultural values of the nation, serving the revolutionary cause. The birth of the Han Nom major at that time showed the special attention and demonstrated the far-sighted vision of the Party and State, for the long-term future of the country's culture and academia, so that the future would not be interrupted with the thousand-year-old cultural source of our ancestors.

After 50 years of establishment and development, the Department of Han Nom, under the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - Vietnam National University, Hanoi, has become one of the prestigious and important addresses in training Han Nom human resources in the country, at all 3 levels: bachelor, master and doctorate.
The culture of each nation is shaped by core values of identity. The Department of Han Nom, University of Social Sciences and Humanities is proud to contribute to preserving core cultural values and is a cultural bridge connecting tradition and modernity, so that the source of national culture is forever passed down and developed.
