Is studying Social Work "just for charity work"?

Dr. Dang Kim Khanh Ly emphasized that studying Social Work is not just "doing charity work", but an official, specialized, humane career, with its own skills and income commensurate with ability.
What is special about the Bachelor of Social Work program?
According to Dr. Dang Kim Khanh Ly, Head of the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), the Bachelor of Social Work training program provides students with basic knowledge of social sciences and humanities, solid knowledge of theory and research methods and practice methods in the field of social work.
From there, it helps learners have a solid knowledge foundation to identify, analyze and intervene with social problems of individuals, groups and vulnerable, disadvantaged communities in the global environment.
The program also develops subjects to train vocational skills, soft skills, and communication skills for learners; focuses on promoting technological capacity in data analysis, foreign language capacity, and innovation and entrepreneurship capacity.
Upon graduation, students will become active, responsible, critical thinkers, with professional skills to adapt and succeed in many fields such as research, applied intervention, teaching, human resource administration, community service, administration, management, communication, public relations, as well as have the ability to continue the learning process throughout life.

Emphasizing the highlights of the Bachelor of Social Work training program at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Dr. Dang Kim Khanh Ly said that the school's Social Work major is trained in a leading environment in Social Sciences and Humanities in the country, so the training program is built on a foundation of extensive and multidisciplinary theory.
In 2024, the Social Work major of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was accredited according to AUN-QA standards (quality accreditation standards for Southeast Asian universities).
Students not only study Social Work but also approach interdisciplinary analytical thinking such as Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Philosophy, etc., helping them gain academic depth and analytical thinking ability.
The program also focuses on innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. This is a new element, a trend of the times. Students are trained in technological capacity in data analysis, understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship, creating a connection between social sciences and technology, helping students adapt better to the modern labor market.
In addition, the school's training program also emphasizes global standards, equipping students with foreign language skills, helping them to continue studying or working abroad, in international non-governmental organizations. This is a trend of internationalization and globalization of human resources, opening up wider career opportunities.
Tuition fee is about 16.9 million VND/year
Regarding the admission scores in recent years, Dr. Dang Kim Khanh Ly said that the Social Work major at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities always has a high entrance score compared to the average of other schools nationwide that recruit students in this major.
In 2024, the school will take 24.39 points in block A01; 27.94 points in block C00; 25.3 points in block D01 and 26.01 points in block D78. Tuition for Social Work is about 16.9 million VND/year.

Dr. Dang Kim Khanh Ly emphasized that students of Social Work at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities not only study in the classroom but also “go to the field” and immerse themselves in social life right from the second year. The school focuses on designing internships, graduation internships and practical courses closely linked to reality.
The system of diverse and prestigious internship locations such as: International and domestic non-governmental organizations; Social protection centers, public and private social work service centers - places to support children, the elderly, the disabled, people in difficult circumstances, ...; Mental hospitals, medical centers - psychological counseling - drug addiction treatment - rehabilitation.
In addition, the internship location is also the social work department at major hospitals such as Bach Mai Hospital, National Children's Hospital, E Hospital, National Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, etc.; Educational institutions, schools, life skills training centers for students.
“The school also regularly cooperates with international exchange programs and projects, creating conditions for students to participate in internships and learn from foreign organizations and universities. Students with good English and professional skills have the opportunity to exchange and practice with international students from Thailand, Korea, Japan, the US, Canada, Australia, etc. or participate in international seminars on social work,” added Dr. Dang Kim Khanh Ly.
Studying social work is not just about "doing charity work"
Currently, many parents think that "studying Social Work will only lead to volunteer work, charity work, and community assistance, so the salary will be low". Dr. Dang Kim Khanh Ly emphasized that this is a common thought, stemming from an incomplete understanding of the Social Work industry, because people often see through the media images of people doing unpaid charity work, or voluntary community assistance activities.
However, Social Work is a professional profession, with systematic knowledge training, a stable job system and income, even very good if highly specialized; it is a profession recognized by Vietnamese law as an official profession.

Graduates can work in many professional positions with salaries based on their abilities such as in State agencies (social workers in hospitals, schools, welfare centers, prisons...), with salaries calculated according to State salaries with allowances and payroll.
They can also work at international businesses and organizations as project officers, community development experts, consultants at non-governmental organizations - salaries can range from 15 to 40 million VND/month or higher.
Another direction is to work in the field of education - communication - human resources, as a recruitment specialist, human resource manager, school counselor, skill development consultant, inspirational MC... - the salary can be from 10 to 30 million VND/month depending on the workplace. Students can also work abroad, or join international organizations with high income and professional working conditions.
“Studying Social Work is not just about “doing charity work”, but a formal, specialized, humane career with its own skills and income commensurate with ability. People who study this major not only help others but also build a solid career for themselves, in the public, private and international sectors”, Dr. Dang Kim Khanh Ly shared.
At the same time, it is emphasized that the rate of Social Work students at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities having jobs 6 months after graduation is from 85-90%, according to a survey conducted annually by the school.
Dr. Dang Kim Khanh Ly also said that the Social Work industry is still in great need of well-trained human resources. There are high job opportunities in hospitals, schools, social care centers, NGOs, or in the fields of health, education, justice and social protection in general.
Employers need people with solid professional knowledge, critical thinking and effective flexible decision making, good communication and organizational skills, planning and work management skills, understanding of technology and the ability to work in a multicultural environment, and foreign language proficiency for international integration.
