- Deputy Director Nguyen Hoang Hai, can you provide information about the 2021 VNU High School Graduation Exam?
Based on the application of scientific measurement of educational quality applied to the 2015 and 2016 National High School Graduation Exam, VNU assigned the Testing Center as a specialized unit to develop the National High School Graduation Exam.
Unlike previous years, the National High School Graduation Exam in the coming period will approach the assessment of high school students' abilities in a more comprehensive way, in line with modern testing science. The three main groups of abilities that need to be assessed include: Creativity and problem solving; Math, Vietnamese, language thinking, reasoning, logic, calculation and data processing; Self-discovery and application of technology/science (natural - social). Therefore, the National High School Graduation Exam results aim at many purposes: assessing high school students' abilities to classify them after graduating from high school; advising on teaching and learning activities, ensuring the quality of education; forecasting the quality of general human resources; serving the work of enrollment and forecasting university learning outcomes; career guidance for students...

Permanent Deputy Director of VNU Nguyen Hoang Hai
- Could you please tell us about the new points of the high school student's national exam compared to the exam organized by VNU in 2015-2016?
The National High School Graduation Exam is a non-traditional approach (studying and taking exams by block or combination) to comprehensively assess the capacity of high school students studying the old general education program (issued in 2006) and continuing the general education program (in 2018). Therefore, the National High School Graduation Exam is an approach to comprehensively assess the capacity of high school students, not simply serving university admissions as in the 2015-2016 period.
In terms of structure, the National High School Exam consists of 3 parts:
- Part 1: Quantitative thinking includes 50 questions to be completed in 75 minutes;
- Part 2: Qualitative thinking has 50 questions, 60 minutes;
- Part 3: Science includes 50 questions in the fields of natural sciences, technology and social sciences, 60 minutes.
Candidates take the test on the computer, with objective multiple choice questions (choose 1 out of 4 answers) and fill-in-the-blank questions. The test time is 195 minutes, with a score of 150 points.
In 2021, scoring will be done according to the following process: correct answers are worth 1 point, incorrect answers are not counted. Candidates will know their scores for each part and total score immediately after completing the test, and can look up the test results on the portal:
www.khaothi.vnu.edu.vn. The exam result certificate is sent to the candidate 14 days after the exam.
- Can you tell us about the organization of this exam at VNU?
Since 2020, VNU has assigned the VNU Examination Center as a specialized unit to organize the high school graduation exam in a professional and effective manner, saving social costs and ensuring maximum benefits for students.
Up to now, we have built a detailed scenario for the 2021 exams. The exam questions were reviewed from more than 12,000 questions from the 2016 National High School Exam Question Bank to select groups of questions suitable for the 3 identified competency groups mentioned above, combined with more than 3,500 questions built in the period 2017 - 2020. With a rich number of questions, it will ensure the comprehensiveness of the exam, meeting the balance of difficulty of each exam for each student participating in many sessions during the year. The sample exam will be announced before March 15, 2021.
This year, the VNU Examination Center will organize many exam sessions, lasting from May to November. Candidates can register online for the first exam session from April 1, 2021 at the address
www.khaothi.vnu.edu.vnCandidates can choose the exam date, exam session, and exam period that suits their personal plans; they can change the exam time 14 days before the exam. VNU-Hanoi makes maximum use of information technology to increase candidates' initiative and save social costs.
Based on the actual situation, the exam organizing unit will determine the appropriate scale for each exam session and exam location. According to the report of the Examination Center, in 2021, the expected scale is about 10,000 candidates registered for the exam, mainly in Hanoi.
- You mentioned that one of the goals of this year's National High School Exam is to serve university admissions? Could you please tell us more specifically how candidates and universities use the results of this exam for admissions?
As mentioned above, the High School Student Assessment Test serves many purposes, including university admission and career guidance for students. The examination and admission processes are completely separate. All university training programs at VNU will reserve quotas and appropriate criteria for admission to candidates using the results of the High School Student Assessment Test (test code Q00) in addition to the admission methods applied in 2020.
- If outside universities use the results of the National High School Exam for admission, will there be any problems, sir?
Currently, the examination and admission work are completely separated. Universities inside and outside VNU have many different admission methods. On the side of the examination organization, VNU is willing to share resources and results of the high school student's national high school graduation exam with educational and training institutions to achieve the set goals. Particularly for university admission activities, reducing the virtual rate is always a matter of concern, so if universities cooperate in admission, the number of virtual candidates from many different admission sources will be limited. VNU creates all conditions for the admission and virtual filtering work to take place smoothly.
- What advice do you have for candidates registering for the 2021 VNU High School Graduation Exam?
The VNU-Hanoi General Certificate of Secondary Education exam aims to assess the ability of candidates (high school students, independent candidates). Students who register for the exam should avoid rote learning, biased learning or reviewing anywhere and spend time reviewing knowledge, practicing skills, style and attitude before the exam. In case candidates use the exam results for university admission, please find out information about the Admissions Plan of higher education institutions, refer to sample exams before registering for the exam. The online registration portal will open from April 1, 2021 at:
