In response to the information that the Ministry of Education and Training is considering not conducting early university admissions in 2023, except for some special cases, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc (Head of Training Department of VNU) shared an article on Vietnam Education Electronic Magazine. USSH Media respectfully sends it to our readers.

Recently, the report at the fourth quarter meeting onAdmissionand training in 2022, the Ministry of Education and Training said it is considering not conducting early university admissions in 2023, except for some special cases. All university admission methods, including those based on high school graduation exam results, will be implemented at the same time.

In addition, the Ministry also requires universities to review admission methods and eliminate ineffective methods that cause interference to candidates and the admission system.

Discussing this issue with the Vietnam Education Electronic Magazine, Professor, Doctor of Science Nguyen Dinh Duc (Head of the Training Department of Hanoi National University) said that early admission has become a common practice, so the Ministry of Education and Training should create conditions for schools to consider early admission (later high school graduation will only be an additional condition) with a commitment to clear, public, and transparent implementation.

Early admission is meaningful for both candidates and creates many advantages for the recruitment process of training institutions. Outstanding students will have time to consider and make the most reasonable and best choice for themselves.

Meanwhile, the university will carefully review each candidate's profile, have separate entrance exams and assessments of their abilities, so the admission process will be implemented more thoroughly and effectively.

Because early admission is mainly for admission ofexcellent student, carried out in a transparent and objective manner, helping schools select and "retain" candidates with good input quality.

Hanoi National University always shows high responsibility in admission work, direct admission and priority admission methods are always implemented clearly, transparently and effectively. Early admission method will be one of the necessary options to create a good source of input for basic science majors.

“And early admission is also a common trend of many universities in the world, in order to not overload the admission system of the schools. In addition to the academic results, training institutions proactively combine interviews, organize tests to assess capacity, aptitude, etc. to select suitable candidates. Implementing admission in this direction is very good, and in accordance with the Law on Higher Education.

“If the requirement of not considering early admission for all admission methods is putting unnecessary pressure on training institutions, the Ministry of Education and Training should not rigidly manage administration and needs to ensure the autonomy of universities in admissions,” Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc affirmed.

Regarding the proposal to eliminate ineffective methods that cause interference to candidates and the admission system, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc said that this is an issue related to admission quality that the Ministry of Education and Training needs to manage.

There are many nowAdmission methodpoor quality, unable to properly assess candidates' abilities. In addition, there are too many unnecessary admission combinations. Meanwhile, the high school graduation exam scores of some subjects are also not substantial.

Schools use too many admission methods and too many admission combinations, which is like "scavenging" enough candidates, and thus no students fail the university entrance exam.

“Instead of administratively managing university admissions, the Ministry of Education and Training should “take control” of quality, reduce some ineffective admissions methods, and direct based on science and practice in the past to return to basic admissions methods. The Ministry should closely monitor this issue, which admission combination corresponds to which major should be clearly regulated by the Ministry so that admissions activities achieve the highest quality, instead of being “left alone” as they are now,” Professor Duc stated his opinion.
