Digital transformation of journalism – an inevitable trend in the sustainable development of journalism and media in the current period

On the morning of June 11, the Institute of Journalism and Communication (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU) in collaboration with the Information and Communication Magazine (Ministry of Information and Communications) organized a national scientific conference with the theme: "Digital transformation of journalism - some theoretical and practical issues" within the framework of the "June Press Forum" to celebrate the 97th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 - June 21, 2022).

Overview of the Workshop

On the side of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, there were Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong (Vice Principal, Director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication), Dr. Phan Van Kien (Vice Director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication) and many staff, lecturers and students of the school.
The workshop welcomed Mr. Le Quoc Minh (Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department), Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam (Director of the Press Department, Ministry of Information and Communications); Mr. Nguyen Phu Tien (Deputy Director of the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Information and Communications), Journalist Nguyen Hoang Nhat (Deputy Editor-in-Chief of VietnamPlus Newspaper); Journalist Nguyen Le Tan (Director of VTCnow Digital Content Center, VTC Television Station), Journalist Nguyen Kim Chung (General Director of Hanoi Radio and Television Station) and many journalists and reporters from news agencies and newspapers in Hanoi.
Speaking at the opening of the Workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong expressed her gratitude for the attention and support of the leaders of major newspapers, Vietnam Television, Voice of Vietnam, ... journalists and reporters who attended and will have presentations at the Workshop. This is an annual scientific event within the framework of the "June Journalism Forum" organized by the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training in coordination with the Information and Communication Magazine, with the goal of strengthening cooperation in research between mass media agencies, proposing many initiatives and actions for the sustainable development of Vietnamese journalism in the new era: the digital age.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong emphasized: “In the digital transformation process, the press and media play an important role, with the mission of propagating correctly, fully and promptly the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws, creating consensus and trust in society, creating motivation to successfully implement national digital transformation. At the same time, the press is also a field in society, so it is necessary to carry out digital transformation according to the general development trend of society. As one of the two leading prestigious training institutions for journalism and media in the country, the Institute of Journalism and Media Training has been building training programs, research topics as well as community connection activities towards digital transformation”.

On the occasion of the Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong sent her congratulations and presented a bouquet of fresh flowers to the journalists attending the conference. Mr. Le Quoc Minh represented the journalists to receive the congratulatory flowers.

After the opening speech of the representative of the Board of Directors of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Workshop went into two main parts: Part 1: Digital transformation strategy of journalism - vision 2030; Part 2: Digital transformation of Vietnamese journalism - Practical perspectives. In each part, the Workshop listened to reports, discussions, and speeches of the delegates. The content of the exchanged opinions focused on the main issues of the current Vietnamese press such as: Issues arising in the implementation of building a modern, professional, multi-platform, multimedia Vietnamese press, in line with the development trend of digital technology and world media. The issues raised and proposed to state management agencies in orienting and leading the digital transformation of journalism, supporting press agencies in the process of testing modern technology to change management models, operations, production processes, etc. to optimize operations, create quality products, opportunities, revenue and added values. In addition, many delegates presented in-depth analysis from the practical digital transformation activities in their own units and proposed a number of specific solutions for the digital transformation of journalism activities in Vietnam today.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam (Director of the Press Department - Ministry of Information and Communications) emphasized: In the digital transformation period, we need to learn from each other, support each other and use shared resources. Media and press agencies need to proactively transform digitally because in the current technology trend, the press is forced to move to the digital space.

Speaking at the workshop, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper Le Quoc Minh said that recently, the story of digital transformation has been mentioned in almost all fields. In the field of journalism, many editorial offices and reporters do not have much experience and knowledge about digital transformation. Based on the outstanding digital transformation results of Nhan Dan Newspaper in recent times, Mr. Le Quoc Minh proposed a number of solutions and plans to promote digital transformation in the coming time: implementing the information production process in an integrated manner; making maximum use of measurement and analysis tools; investing in modern technology and a team of talented technology personnel; strengthening research and development, applying artificial intelligence (AI) and robot journalism. Along with that is the policy of diversifying revenue sources; directly collecting reader data (first-party data); cooperating to publish content on many non-press platforms...

Dr. Phan Van Kien - Deputy Director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication, University of Social Sciences and Humanities shared: The important role of journalism and social media is to connect, act as an intermediary to connect society, so it is necessary to prioritize digital transformation first. As one of the two leading journalism training units in the country, the Institute of Journalism and Communication is always ready to pioneer in building a model of a space to practice digital transformation of journalism or other practical - experimental models; at the same time, develop new training majors to meet the requirements of practice and social needs.

In his closing speech at the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Chi Trung expressed his thanks to the officials, researchers, journalists, reporters, teachers and students who attended and contributed many valuable and practical ideas and solutions.
