Nearly 17,000 candidates officially entered the second round of the 2015 competency assessment exam.
Following the success of the first round, based on the number of candidates registered for the exam and actual conditions, VNU continued to organize the second round of the regular university entrance exam – August 2015. With 16,849 candidates registered for the exam, VNU organized the exam in 7 provinces/cities including Hanoi, Da Nang, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Nam Dinh, Hai Phong and Thai Nguyen. There were a total of 11 exam sites, of which 5 were in Hanoi.
Notably, in the second round, VNU does not organize foreign language exams.
Speaking at the press briefing on the morning of August 1, Deputy Director and Head of the 2015 VNU Admissions Steering Committee Nguyen Kim Son said that on the first day of the second round of exams (August 1), VNU organized exams in 3 exam clusters including Da Nang, Hai Phong and Nghe An. According to preliminary statistics after the first exam, the average total number of candidates taking the exam in the 3 exam clusters was 61.98%. By the second exam session - the afternoon of August 1, the total number of candidates present for the exam was about 63%.
Vice President Nguyen Kim Son commented: “Compared to the first batch, this rate is about 34% lower. However, this is not beyond VNU’s prediction and it is completely normal.”
To ensure fairness and stability in terms of philosophy, regulations, procedures, techniques, exam questions, evaluation methods, scoring and many other factors, the second round of the exam remains unchanged compared to the first round. However, in the second round, VNU has adjusted some technical issues in a more reasonable, simple and convenient direction for candidates as well as management and operation such as: Organizing candidates to register for the exam in two forms: via the internet or directly at the VNU Examination Center; Only posting information on the exam notice on the website of the VNU Examination Center at the addresshttp://cet.vnu.edu.vnCandidates must print or copy the information about the exam room, exam time, exam location, etc. and pay the fee through branches of the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) or candidates can pay directly at the Examination Center of VNU.
In addition, the time for the second round of exams has been adjusted compared to the plan in early 2015. Instead of organizing the exam in 2 days, VNU will organize the exam longer, from August 1 to August 6, and the backup days are August 7 and 8, 2015. The time interval between the morning and afternoon exams has also been adjusted to increase by 15 minutes compared to before to facilitate the exam organization.
After listing and analyzing some errors that candidates are likely to make in the first round, VNU has adjusted the software, increasing warnings to candidates from the beginning of the exam to avoid bad consequences from candidates' wrong operations, minimizing the number of candidates having to change exam shifts.
In particular, the test set has also been reviewed, refined and some new questions have been added according to the correct principles. VNU still applies modern testing theory in climbing questions (connecting questions) to ensure the difficulty between the test sets is balanced. After the first round, VNU also checked the candidates' records and test traces; reviewed the combination software many times in many different forms. The results showed that the software worked well, extracted questions accurately, ensuring the balance in the ratio of difficult and easy questions in each test set.
The results from the survey of 41 candidates with the highest scores in the first round of the competency assessment exam have proven that. The average score of 41 candidates between the mock exam and the official exam was only 1-2 points. Thus, it can be affirmed that the ability to balance the difficulty of the exam questions of VNU is guaranteed.
According to Vice President Nguyen Kim Son, VNU does not allocate specific quotas for each exam period but still persists in implementing the viewpoint that exams and admissions are two different stages. The basis for admission is the quality threshold of candidates and there will be differences between each training major and each time period.
“When enrolling in the first round, VNU calculated a certain percentage of candidates, but did not recruit enough. Because the exact percentage of candidates admitted in the first round was not known, after August 20, 2015, VNU announced the exact number of candidates for each major to serve the second round of enrollment,” added Vice President Nguyen Kim Son.
Affirming that the number of candidates having to switch to another exam session in the second round will be much lower than in the first round, Vice President Nguyen Kim Son said that in the second round, VNU has prepared very carefully the equipment for the exam and at the same time increased warnings and reminders for candidates right from the beginning of the exam to avoid common mistakes like in the first round.
Vice President Nguyen Kim Son emphasized: “The current student/lecturer ratio of VNU is 15 – almost reaching international standards, so training targets are not a concern for VNU. Even if the first admission rate is high, VNU will still ensure the rights of candidates who have received admission notices and still create opportunities for candidates with high scores in the second round.”
Tomorrow (August 2), candidates will continue to take the competency assessment test at two testing clusters: Hai Phong and Nghe An.

In the first round (taking place from May 30, 31 to June 1, 2, 2015 at 9 examination clusters with 21 examination locations in 7 provinces and cities nationwide), 43,369/45,350 candidates registered to take the exam (95.63%) of which 13,253/14,598 candidates took the foreign language exam (90.79%). Candidates took the exam seriously and strictly followed the examination regulations.

The results of the first round of the competency assessment exam are the initial success of VNU in its efforts to innovate exams in the direction of becoming more objective, accurate, fair, transparent, convenient, less costly, and reducing pressure on candidates, their families, and society. After the exam, the majority of candidates said that the new exam format is convenient, fair, and accurately and comprehensively assesses candidates' abilities.
