Historical Milestones - Proud Achievements

After 70 years of construction and development from the University of Letters (1945), Hanoi University of Science (1956), the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi today has had a history that is not smooth but has continuously progressed with many extremely important and proud achievements. USSH would like to summarize "Historical milestones - Proud achievements" of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in 70 years of tradition and 20 years of construction and development printed in the book "History of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities 1945 - 2015".

Historical Milestones - Proud Achievements

1. The period of the University of Letters

- On October 10, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh signed Decree No. 45/SL to establish the University of Literature within the structure of the Vietnam National University. The University of Literature is the predecessor of the University of Social Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi today. October 10, 1945 became the traditional day of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi.

- On November 15, 1945, at the Great Hall at 19 Le Thanh Tong, the Opening Ceremony of the first new school year of the University of Literature took place with the chairmanship of President Ho Chi Minh. The Vietnamese university system under the new regime was officially born.

First principal: Professor Dang Thai Mai.

Number of students: 253 official students and 81 auditors (auditors)

Training majors: Oriental Philosophy, Vietnamese Literature, Chinese Literature, Western Literature, History, Geography and Language.

Lecturers: 25 professors, including: Dang Thai Mai, Dao Duy Anh, Cao Xuan Huy, Ho Huu Tuong, Nguyen Duc Nguyen, Nguyen Van Huyen, Nguyen Manh Tuong, Nguyen Huy Bao, Cu Huy Can, Ngo Xuan Dieu, Tran Van Giap, Tran Khanh Giu, Pham Duy Khiem, Bui Ky, Nguyen Dinh Thi, Doan Phu Tu. Notably, President Ho Chi Minh, Pham Van Dong, Vo Nguyen Giap also participated in teaching.

2. Hanoi University period

- On June 4, 1956, the Government issued Decision No. 2184/TC to establish 5 universities and 15 vocational high schools, including Hanoi University of Science, with a structure consisting of natural sciences and social sciences (Literature and History).

- First Principal: Prof. Nguyen Nhu Kon Tum

- On October 15, 1956, the first Opening Ceremony of the University was held. Course I (1956-1957) included 430 students.

3. The period of completion and development of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU

- On December 10, 1993, the Government issued Decree 97/CP deciding to establish Hanoi National University on the basis of organizing and rearranging 3 major universities in Hanoi: Hanoi University of Science, Hanoi Pedagogical University 1, Hanoi University of Foreign Languages.

- From September 19, 1995, member schools of Hanoi National University, including the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, officially came into operation.

* 5 School development programs for the period 1997-2003:

Program 1: Building and developing staff, innovating school management.

Program 2: Compiling undergraduate and postgraduate programs and textbooks; innovating training management and teaching methods.

Program 3: Expand and improve the quality and effectiveness of scientific research and international cooperation.

Program 4: Continue to renovate, upgrade, build new and gradually modernize facilities serving training and scientific research.

Chapter 5: Correcting and strengthening discipline in teaching, learning, working and building a humane environment.

* 6 School development programs for the period 2003-2010:

Program 1: Continuing to innovate political and ideological education and ethics in schools

Program 2: Standardizing staff and organization and management work in the School

Program 3: Continue to innovate training activities, improve the quality of undergraduate and postgraduate training.

Program 4: Expanding and improving the quality and effectiveness of scientific research and international cooperation

Program 5: Promote the use of information technology, modernize facilities to serve the school's activities.

Program 6: Standardize work and study activities and continue to build a humane environment.

* 4 School development programs for the period 2011-2015:

Program 1: Building and developing a team of qualified staff, quickly integrating regionally and internationally.

Program 2: Building and developing industries and majors to reach international standards as the core of the process of improving training quality.

Program 3: Building high-quality scientific products to serve training and national development requirements.

Program 4: University governance towards building advanced university governance.

- As of 2015, the structure of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities includes: 16 faculties, 10 departments, 12 centers, 01 museum, 01 institute, 01 tourism - science service company.

- 189 textbooks published from 1995 to present.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS

1. Awards for scientific research:

- 10 teachers were awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize, 13 teachers were awarded the State Prize for Science and Technology.

2. Teacher title:

- 29 teachers were awarded the title of People's Teacher, 49 teachers were awarded the title of Excellent Teacher.

3. State awards:

- Third Class Labor Medal, 1961 (Hanoi National University)

- Second Class Labor Medal. 1977 (Hanoi National University)

- First Class Labor Medal, 1981 (Hanoi National University)

- Third Class Independence Medal, 1986 (Hanoi National University)

- Second Class Independence Medal, 1995 (Hanoi National University)

- Second Class Labor Medal, 2000

- First Class Independence Medal, 2001

- Hero of Labor in the renovation period, 2005

- Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister, 2007, 2013

- Government Emulation Flag, 2010

- Ho Chi Minh Medal, 2010

- Faculty of History: Title of Heroic Labor Unit

- Professor, People's Teacher Tran Van Giau: Title of Hero of Labor

- 200 Labor Medals of various ranks, Military Exploit Medals, Victory Medals, Medals, and Anti-American National Salvation Medals awarded to collectives and individuals in the School

- 73 collectives and officials were awarded Certificates of Merit by the Prime Minister

- 300 groups and officials were awarded Certificates of Merit by ministries, branches and Hanoi National University.

- 200 officials were awarded the Medal for the Cause of Education and Training.

- 50 officers were awarded Medals for their contributions to Science and Technology.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam received flowers and a commemorative medal from Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Nguyen Van Khanh (Principal of the School)

School Union:

- Third Class Labor Medal, 2011.

- Second Class Labor Medal, 2009.

- Certificate of Merit from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor in the years: 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003.

- Certificates of merit from Hanoi Labor Federation and Vietnam Education Trade Union: 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003.

- 10 consecutive years recognized as an excellent strong grassroots union.

- 200 union members were awarded certificates of merit at all levels.

- Central Youth Union awarded Certificate of Merit: From 1995 - 2012.

The Trade Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities received a Certificate of Merit from the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor and the Ministry of Education and Training.

Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and School Student Association:

- Leading flag of the Youth Union movement of Hanoi National University in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011.

- 100 Certificates of Merit from the Central Youth Union, Hanoi City Youth Union, and Hanoi National University Youth Union awarded to groups and individuals.

- Received certificates of merit from Ha Tay and Bac Kan provinces for volunteer movement.

- Central Committee of Vietnam Student Association awarded Certificate of Merit in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012.

- In 2003 and 2004, the School's Student Association was awarded a certificate of merit by the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion for its humanitarian blood donation movement.

- Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister in 2007.

- Third Class Labor Medal in 2010.

Veterans Association:

- Hanoi Veterans Association increased Certificates of Merit in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012.

- 1,333 cadres and students of Hanoi University of Science left to fight against the US to save the country. Dozens of cadres and students from the social sciences departments of Hanoi University of Science, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, heroically sacrificed their lives.
