This coming Wednesday morning (March 23, 2011), at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU), more than 500 Vietnamese and international students will attend the program "Sharing with Japanese friends" about the losses in the recent earthquake.

At this event, students will be introduced to the country, people and culture of Japan as well as informed about the consequences of the earthquake on the people of this country. They will also directly participate in the campaign of folding 10,000 paper cranes - a symbol of peace and hope in Eastern culture, and write prayers for the Japanese people as well as commemorate the nearly 10,000 victims of the recent disaster. In particular, students will share lessons about culture and communication in disasters, drawn from the efforts of the Japanese people to prepare and respond before, during and after the earthquake. In addition, the campaign to raise material support for the Japanese people will also be officially launched among all staff and students of the University at this event. The ceremony “Sharing with Japanese friends” will be attended by Mr. Takeji Yoshikawa, Director of the Vietnam - Japan Cultural Exchange Center, Japan Foundation.
Talking about the idea of organizing this program, Dr. Nguyen Quang Lieu - Head of the Department of Politics and Student Affairs, Head of the Organizing Committee - said: "This is an opportunity for the staff and students of the school to develop the humanistic values that the school is aiming for. Through that, teachers and students in the school show their sharing and sympathy with Japanese friends who are suffering many losses". It is known that Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh - Rector of the school - also led a delegation of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to visit and express condolences to the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities currently has 18 undergraduate training majors, nearly 30 postgraduate training majors, with a total of nearly 13,000 students. This is the first school in the Vietnam National University, Hanoi to convert the training method from the year-based system to the credit system (since 2006). Thanks to that, nearly 40 students in the school have shortened their study time to only 3 years and many students are able to accumulate multiple university degrees at the same time. The school has a major in Japanese Studies, which is trained and researched by the Faculty of Oriental Studies and has received active cooperation and support from Japanese agencies and organizations over the years.
