Conference to review union activities in the first semester of the 2017-2018 school year

On January 31, 2018, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a conference to review the trade union activities of the first semester of the 2017-2018 school year. Attending the conference were Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Principal of the University) and representatives of the Party Committee, leaders and the Executive Committee of the trade unions of the units.

Conference overview

As of January 2018, the whole school had 580 union members, of which 60.86% of lecturers had PhD degrees and 26.9% held the titles of Professor and Associate Professor. In the past semester, the School's Union activities had many outstanding marks. The XXX Congress of the School's Union delegates at the end of March 2017 was successfully held. The new Executive Committee of the School's Union, consisting of 15 comrades, quickly implemented action programs according to the Resolution of the Congress, with the spirit of "Innovation - Democracy - Solidarity - Responsibility". At the 5th Congress of the VNU Trade Union delegates, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities had 02 comrades elected to the VNU Trade Union Executive Committee for the 2017-2022 term.

School union activities in the 2017-2018 school year will focus on the following main tasks:

Firstly, continue to deploy and implement well the Resolution of the 14th Congress of the Vietnam Education Trade Union, the Resolution of the 27th Congress of the School Party Committee, the Resolution of the 30th Congress of the School Trade Union and the 5th Resolution of the VNU Trade Union.

Second, take care of the lives, represent and protect the legitimate rights and interests of teachers and workers; promote patriotic emulation movements and campaigns in the industry, in VNU and the School.

Third, to propagate and mobilize union members to participate in innovation in management work, develop the team of teachers and educational managers; innovate the content and methods of union activities; develop union members; provide professional training for union officials; build a strong union organization, contributing to the implementation of political tasks of the industry, VNU and the School in the 2017-2018 school year.

Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh delivered the opening speech at the Conference, acknowledging the achievements and practical contributions of the School's Trade Union activities in recent times.

Some encouraging results in the last semester of the School Union:

1. Carry out well the work of caring for the lives, representing and protecting the legitimate and legal rights and interests of the staff and civil servants; implement the regime, visit union members in difficult circumstances; participate in emulation and reward review councils, increase salaries on time and ahead of time for staff, and give suggestions for adjusting internal spending regulations.

2. Launch patriotic emulation movements and large-scale social campaigns among cadres, teachers and workers.

3. Improve the quality of staff and the effectiveness of the Trade Union at all levels; build a strong trade union organization; organize training courses on trade union work for trade union officials for the 2017-2022 term; organize seminars; fully participate in training courses organized by the higher-level Trade Union.

4. Inspection work is given regular attention; the Trade Union Standing Committee directs well the activities of the People's Inspectorate.

5. Financial work is public, transparent, economical and effective.

Dr. Ngo Thi Kieu Oanh (Head of Personnel Organization Department, President of the School Trade Union) presented the summary of trade union activities.

For the first time, the School Union organized a contest called “Beautiful photos of female union members” on Facebook. The contest not only attracted 110 female union members and 400 forum members but also had a strong and widespread influence on the school’s general activities. This is a breath of fresh air that brings joy and laughter, honoring the simple yet delicate beauty, sparkling intelligence and love of the female staff.

The seminar “Innovation and creativity in teaching and research” was attended by 120 staff with 03 presentations and 05 opinions from 21 departmental unions. For the first time, a survey report from the perspective of students was presented, providing feedback from learners, supplementing objective assessments for the innovation in teaching and research of the School’s lecturers.

The union staff training conference is a combination of training and event organization. This is the first time this innovative method has been implemented. The union launched the contest “New ideas for union activities” and implemented it right in the training program. In just a short time of launching, 15 activity ideas were proposed and the Organizing Committee awarded 05 first prizes and 04 promising prizes for good ideas.

The school-wide sports exchange to celebrate Vietnamese Teachers’ Day was a great success. The atmosphere became exciting throughout the school campus with football, badminton, tug of war, and table tennis competitions throughout the competition. There were 18 teams with more than 300 athletes who were staff and students of the school participating.

In addition, the Conference also listened to comments from union officials, representatives of Party cells and leaders of units to adjust and remove difficulties, and make recommendations to improve union activities in the coming time.

The conference noted the typical marks, creating both quantitative and qualitative changes in union activities. It can be seen that the activities in the past time have had a positive impact, changing the perception of the role of the union in the School. Innovation, creativity, democracy and responsibility cover union activities, creating excitement, contributing to improving labor efficiency and the connection between the team of lecturers, civil servants with the collective, work and the School.

The School Union has been active in supporting, coordinating and giving support in recent times:

  • Coordinate with the Inspection and Legal Department to disseminate new legal documents and regulations for employees to unit leaders and union officials.
  • In coordination with the Veterans Association and the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the School organized an exchange and gratitude to war invalids and martyrs' relatives on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs' Day (July 2017).
  • Support the Association of Former Teachers to successfully organize the seminar "Memories of Russia (November 7, 2017), attracting over 60 delegates who are former teachers who studied and worked in Russia and nearly 20 Russian students to attend".
  • Successfully organized a field trip for all members of the Association of Former Teachers in Hai Phong (December 10, 2017), attracting over 100 retired cadres.
  • The Trade Union organized a visit and presented gifts to wounded soldiers and victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin at the Vietnam Friendship Village on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of War Invalids and Martyrs Day (July 2017).
  • The Union supported Mu Cang Chai High School (Yen Bai) which was severely damaged by floods (August 2017) with 52,000,000 VND and 20 sets of textbooks and reference books.
  • Some active union members in the following units: Faculty of Management Science, Faculty of Political Science, Faculty of Information - Library, Headquarters, Faculty of Literature, Faculty of Sociology... contributed books and clothes to students of Tram Tau Primary School (Yen Bai).
  • In October 2017, the School's Trade Union donated 40 million VND to flood victims through the VNU Trade Union; and successfully organized the 2017-2022 NK School Alumni Association Congress (October 26, 2017).
  • Participated in the football tournament organized by the Ethnic Students and won second prize.
