"Towards a university of international standards" is the title of the article by Professor Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh (Principal of the University) posted on
Hanoi Moi Online Newspaper, May 25, 2010.The article affirms the achievements that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has achieved over the past decades, the mission and strategic tasks that the University needs to carry out in the coming years. Inheriting the 65-year tradition of the University of Letters and more than 50 years of Hanoi National University, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU) continues to maintain its position as the leading training and research center in the social sciences and humanities of Vietnam. Among the nearly 20 undergraduate majors and nearly 50 postgraduate majors that the University is currently training, there are basic, traditional majors such as Literature, History, Philosophy and Linguistics; The majors are associated with the names of founding professors such as Dang Thai Mai, Tran Van Giau, Dao Duy Anh, Tran Duc Thao... These majors have built the reputation of the school for more than half a century and continue to affirm their position with the names of famous teachers and scientists such as Dinh Xuan Lam, Phan Huy Le, Tran Quoc Vuong, Ha Van Tan, Hoang Nhu Mai, Le Dinh Ky, Nguyen Tai Can, Phan Cu De, Ha Minh Duc, etc. Besides the traditional majors, the school has implemented many new majors, newly enrolled but have attracted the attention of many candidates such as Social Work, Political Science, Anthropology and Vietnamese Studies. Currently, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities is one of the first universities in Vietnam to apply the credit-based training method, creating connectivity between faculties in the school, between the school and member schools of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and between the school and foreign schools. Starting from the first 57 courses formed during the implementation of credit-based training in the 2007-2008 school year, up to now, 100% of the courses have been formed in the form of courses (semester II of the 2009-2010 school year had over 800 courses), completely eliminating the year-based courses. With the credit-based form, some students of the school will graduate earlier than the normal training process (4 years). With the school's development strategy of quickly becoming a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research university, staff work is considered one of the key tasks. Inheriting and promoting the achievements of the previous Hanoi University of Science, following in the footsteps of generations of professors who built the social sciences and humanities of Vietnam, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities continues to be one of the leading universities in the country in terms of the ratio of professors, doctors and senior lecturers to the total number of lecturers in the school. Every 6 teaching staff in the school is a Professor or Associate Professor, and every 3 lecturers in the school is a Doctor or Doctor of Science. Of the total of nearly 400 lecturers at the school today, nearly 80% have postgraduate degrees, and the remaining 20% are mostly studying for master's degrees or doctoral degrees. The school's highly qualified, experienced and dedicated teaching staff are currently a team of trusted experts, assigned to preside over many national-level scientific works and international projects. From 2007 to 2009 alone, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was assigned to preside over 5 state-level topics such as: 'Building and promoting Vietnamese intellectual resources to serve the cause of national revival in the 21st century', 'Family issues in social development and management of social development in our country in the renovation period', 'Basic characteristics of people and culture of the Vietnamese community abroad today'... The successes in teaching, research and international cooperation of the University in recent times have contributed to creating a University of Social Sciences and Humanities rich in traditional identity that is modern, dynamic and intellectual. That is a solid foundation for the University to excellently fulfill the tasks assigned by the Party and the State, creating conditions for the establishment of a research university, contributing effectively to the cause of industrialization, modernization of the country and international integration.
