General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was a student of the Faculty of Literature, Hanoi University, academic year 1963 - 1967, with Professor and People's Teacher Ha Minh Duc as Head. In 1967, under the guidance of Professor Dinh Gia Khanh, the fourth-year student successfully defended his graduation thesis on the topic: "Folk poetry with poet To Huu". He was the only one to achieve the optimal score.
That same school year, the General Secretary was honored to be admitted into the Party ranks, a very rare, sacred and proud thing for students at that time.
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's special affection for the school he attended during his university years is expressed in his emotional feelings every time he talks about the school, teachers, and classmates; in his sincere words of encouragement, and in his profound directions for the school's development strategy...
In 2010, when visiting the school, meeting teachers, friends and generations of students from later generations, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, as a former student of the Faculty of Literature, emotionally shared: "I grew up at this school and am forever proud of the tradition and brand that the school has."
The simplicity and sincerity of the General Secretary always leave a strong impression on generations of teachers and students every time he returns to visit the school. Studying 7 terms after the General Secretary, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Long, former Party Secretary, former Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, lecturer of the Faculty of Literature, shared his emotional thoughts about the respected leader.
"For several decades now, few country leaders have shown such profound consistency in ideology, morality, and lifestyle as the General Secretary. Such a person is a person with a very far-sighted vision and must have such conditions for him to be able to carry out his duties. There is pride and admiration, but one thing is that the cultural personality of that person is very great and when that person passes away, it leaves a big void in society and in people's hearts," said Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Long.

The humble leaderFor many students who have studied and are studying at the school, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is always a very close alumnus, a great example encouraging them to continuously study, strive, establish themselves and start a career.
Upon hearing that the school he attended was flying its flag at half-mast to commemorate General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, Tran Duc Long, a student of the 63rd class of the Faculty of Journalism, was present at 7 a.m. with all his respect and emotion.
“At this moment, not only I but the whole country is immersed in infinite sorrow at the passing of Uncle Ho, a talented leader, an example of morality, integrity and dedication. As a journalist, he once said: "Journalism is a noble and sacred profession. Revolutionary journalists must have a revolutionary spirit, that is the spirit of attack, fighting to eliminate wrong and bad things, protecting the right and good things, for the common cause of the country and the people". That is also the guiding principle for me when I first entered the profession".

Also with nostalgic and emotional feelings, student Nguyen Thi Nhung, class 65, Faculty of Literature shared: “General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is a great example of morality and lifestyle. In his speeches, he always emphasized qualities and honor. He emphasized that we should live a life of dedication, live to the fullest so that this life has meaning. That is also what I learned from him…
I was very lucky to have the opportunity to meet him at the event welcoming the President of China. He was warm and approachable, noble yet extremely simple. I will try to learn and follow the moral qualities that he taught and set an example for: We must live so as not to feel pain or regret for the years we have lived in vain and wasted.
Standing quietly in a corner of the school yard, looking at the flag with regret, Le Hai An, a student of the 67th class of the Faculty of Political Science, was moved: “General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong once said: “If you are a flower, be a sunflower; if you are a bird, be a white dove; if you are a rock, be a diamond; if you are a person, be a communist”. I feel lucky to be a student, a young Party member of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, where he studied.
The General Secretary is a great personality, a flag of discipline and exemplary of the Party, always devoted to the revolutionary cause of the nation. The noble ideals that he left have urged me to always strive and make continuous efforts in studying and training to develop comprehensively, become a virtuous and talented person, contributing to building a stronger and more prosperous country in the future."
General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has passed away, but for the teachers and students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, he has always accompanied and will forever be a source of pride and great encouragement for the school to continuously develop, grow, and make worthy contributions to the cause of protecting, building and developing the country as he always expected and entrusted.
