The Group of Maritime and Asian Commercial Studies (VNU) has a history dating back to 1999 (when it was called the Group of Asian Commercial Studies -
Group of Asian Commercial Studies, USSH, VNU - was established on the basis of some members of the Department of World History (now the Department of Global History), Faculty of History, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. During the development process, the members of the Group have expanded. After nearly 25 years of development, the Group has achieved a number of achievements in the fields of research, training and international cooperation.
Since 1990, the domestic and international situation has changed a lot. Faced with new historical conditions and requirements for researchers, for the development of the country and the inherent requirements of the fields of study, many scientists and lecturers of universities, including the staff teaching and researching World History, realized that they needed to innovate in thinking and action. In that context, members of the Department of World History realized that they needed to quickly change, adapt, and integrate with the regional and international academic environment, and at the same time boldly delve into new research areas, contributing to clarifying the typical characteristics and position of Vietnam as a closely-knit member of the region. Under the gathering and guidance of Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim, Head of the Department of World History, the Asian Maritime and Trade Research Group was formed and has grown steadily. Group members have participated in and organized programs, research projects, established relationships with partners, strengthened their position, and expanded the Group's professional influence.
Pursuing the motto: Research on World History must start from Vietnam's position, placed in the relationship and for the benefit of Vietnam as proposed by the Group Leader, since 1999, the Group has determined the direction of fundamental and in-depth research on trade, especially Vietnam's maritime trade with East Asian countries. That research direction not only contributes to clarifying the tradition of exploiting the sea, developing the marine economy, economic and cultural exchanges at sea in Vietnam's history, but also aims for a comprehensive and increasingly deeper view of Vietnam's history and culture. From focusing on researching maritime trade, the Group is also interested in researching the process of exploring, establishing and protecting Vietnam's sovereignty over the sea and islands.
During the training and research process, the Group always attaches importance to acquiring and developing a system of theories and methods and always links theory, theory and research methods with practice to build and strengthen the fundamental foundations for the sustainable development of the Group.
In 2015, the Asian History and Trade Relations Research Group was officially recognized as one of the 21 strong research groups of VNU. With its achievements, the Group has affirmed its leading position in the field of research and the combination of research, training and publication of research results.
In 2023, the name was changed to the Asian Maritime and Trade Research Group and was continued to be recognized by VNU as a Strong Research Group of VNU.
