50 years ago, academic cooperation began between the University of Greifswald and its partners in Vietnam. In 1969, the first Vietnamese students came to Greifswald to study. Before that, TU Dresden also welcomed the first Vietnamese students to its school. Since then, academic cooperation between these two universities and many other German universities has been continuously developed with Vietnam, leading to close cooperation between Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany in the field of higher education.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of this event, the four units have coordinated to organize a meeting with alumni who have studied in Germany with the theme “Alumni are the initiators of academic cooperation”. The exchanges and discussions between Vietnamese alumni and German friends at the event help to look back at the beginning of the above cooperation and re-evaluate the achievements and experiences gained. On the other hand, the alumni will propose and suggest future development directions and models to enhance academic cooperation activities between Vietnamese and German universities.
German Ambassador to Vietnam - Dr. Guido Hildner spoke at the ceremony.
Notable presentations at the event include: “Opportunities and challenges of internationalization of Vietnamese universities" by Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Minh Son (Rector of Hanoi University of Science and Technology); "50 years of academic cooperation with Vietnam" by Prof. Dr. Michael North (Director of the Institute of History, University of Greifswald); "Vietnam and TU Dresden - a stable bridge with a solid foundation” by Katharina Schmitt (TU Dresden); “Experience in Germany and its impact on Vietnam: from a comparative cultural perspective" by Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU); "Perspectives on academic collaboration from a young alumnus' perspective" by Dr. Nguyen Tien Quang (Hanoi University of Science and Technology).
Alumni also participated in group discussions on the topic “Opportunities and challenges of academic cooperation between Vietnam and Germany in the context of higher education reform in Vietnam” with specific discussions on: Does increasing university autonomy provide better cooperation opportunities? Weaknesses and strengths of research? Practical orientation and improving employability? Higher education cooperation: what are the common benefits? The role of DAAD alumni in promoting cooperation between the two countries?
