Presentation “Climate and Environment of Vietnam in the 17th-19th Centuries: History, Documents and Approaches”

On September 30, 2019, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) in collaboration with the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CASE) in Paris (France) successfully organized the first seminar in a series of seminars on Environmental History of Vietnam.

Presentation “Climate and Environment of Vietnam in the 17th-19th Centuries: History, Documents and Approaches”

The seminar aims to create a space for academic exchange between lecturers, researchers, graduate students, and students at home and abroad on environmental history, the impact of the environment on life, culture, urban transformation under the impact of the environment... in the modern historical period of Vietnam.

The seminar attracted the participation of nearly 40 lecturers, researchers, and graduate students from Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), the Institute of History, Ho Chi Minh National University, the Institute of Archaeology, Hanoi National University of Education, etc. The two main speakers of the seminar were Associate Professor Hoang Anh Tuan (Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU) and Professor Emmanuel Poisson (Denis Diderot University, Paris, France).

Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan's research focuses on exploiting some aspects of "Sources of materials, topics and challenges in studying environmental history in the pre-modern period in Vietnam". Meanwhile, Professor Emmanuel Poisson goes into depth to analyze "Some Viewpoints and Perceptions on the environment in the modern period in Vietnam".

The seminar ended with many questions, comments and research suggestions from domestic and foreign researchers, thereby promising a research prospect. The second seminar is scheduled to be held in December 2019.
