Applying smart technology in sustainable tourism development

This is the content discussed at the National Tourism Conference with the theme "Application of digital technology, exploitation of heritage values, serving sustainable tourism development in Vietnam" co-organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, in collaboration with Van Lang University on April 19, 2024.
The workshop is a forum for experts, businesses and many research units to meet, exchange information, evaluate new research trends and propose improvements for Vietnam tourism. At the same time, the workshop encourages universities to exchange experiences to improve the quality of scientific research, thereby applying research achievements into practice, contributing to the sustainable development of the national tourism industry.
The workshop revolved around three key topics: Applying digital technology in tourism; Exploiting the value of heritage in tourism activities; Developing sustainable tourism with many valuable comments from experts, scientists, and policy makers.

In his report at the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Hong Long - Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, stated that in order to develop sustainable tourism, the tourism industry needs to pay attention to carrying capacity - capacity in tourism; clean energy and renewable energy; carbon-reducing tourism... "In addition, we need to focus on the issue of climate change, sustainable tourism development policies and circular economy. Because sustainable tourism is tourism activities with the goal of bringing economic benefits, creating jobs for the community; satisfying the diverse needs of tourism participants... on the basis of exploiting resources; at the same time, being aware of investing in embellishing, preserving and maintaining the integrity of natural resources, ensuring a clean environment; must attach the responsibility and rights of the community in exploiting, using and protecting resources and the environment", Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Hong Long said.
MSc. Hoang Ngoc Hien - Deputy Head of the Faculty of Tourism, Van Lang University, said that to solve the limitations and challenges in developing sustainable tourism, the Vietnamese tourism industry needs to invest in applying digital technology. In particular, it is necessary to pay attention to applying digital technology right in the training programs of schools, in each subject related to sustainable tourism development; at the same time, schools need to promote cooperation in training on applying digital technology in tourism when linking with international schools, leading experts...

Director of the Department of Training, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Le Anh Tuan highly appreciated the workshop for closely following the orientation of the industry's hot issues. Currently, the application of smart tourism still has many shortcomings, requiring those working in the tourism sector to find a direction and recommend state management agencies to find the right and correct direction. We need to focus on internal resources, common infrastructure, policy mechanisms, human resources... especially the effectiveness of state management of tourism.
Mr. Tuan suggested some practical applications that the Vietnamese tourism industry can apply such as robot hotels, facial recognition technology - maximizing the tourist experience. Or systems such as automatic doors, check-in within 3 seconds or opening the room door, shopping and paying with... a smile.
The papers presented at the conference are printed in the Proceedings of the 2024 National Tourism Conference with the ISBN publication code of the Hanoi National University Publishing House, aiming to replicate the value of the Conference and spread the knowledge and research experience of experts, scientists, researchers and lecturers to the professional community.
