Chairman of the US Senate Judiciary Committee gives a presentation to VNU students

On the morning of April 17, 2014, Senator Patrick Leahy (Chairman of the US Senate Judiciary Committee) gave a speech to students of the Faculty of Law, VNU, on the topic: “The US legal system and judicial activities”. Also attending the exchange were members of the US Senate and the US Ambassador to Vietnam - Mr. David Shear.

Senator Patrick Leahy's speech addressed the fundamental and core principles in the process of building and implementing laws in the US judicial system.

The speech of the US Senator attracted special attention from law students. Many students directly asked the speaker questions about the following issues: the US Congress's views on the negotiation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), solutions to create equality in treatment between male and female workers in the US, the importance of litigation, the principles that create the lasting value of the Constitution, the importance of case law in the US, the role of public defenders, etc.

Senator Patrick Joseph Leahy is the senior member of the U.S. Senate elected from the state of Vermont. He was first elected (in 1975) at the youngest age in the history of the U.S. legislature. Senator Patrick Joseph Leahy is a member of the Democratic Party and Chairman of the Judiciary Committee of the United States Senate.

The talk at VNU is one of a series of activities during the official visit to Vietnam of US Senate President Patrick Joseph Leahy from April 16 to 20.
