Receiving a delegation from Deakin University (Australia)

On September 27, 2018, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Viet Nghia (Head of Cooperation and Development Department) and representatives of the Institute of Journalism and Communication received and worked with a delegation from Deakin University (Australia) led by Professor Michael James Knopp (Head of International Cooperation and Partnership Group, Faculty of Arts and Education).

At the meeting, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Viet Nghia introduced the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - the leading institution for research and training in social sciences and humanities in Vietnam. Initially implementing basic science majors, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities later developed more applied majors to meet social needs. Regarding international cooperation, the University has signed cooperation agreements with more than 300 foreign partners. Associate Professor Dr. Tran Viet Nghia hopes that the University will soon sign an official cooperation agreement with Deakin University to promote activities such as student and lecturer exchanges, conducting joint research projects, and co-organizing international conferences.

On behalf of the Institute of Journalism and Communication, Dr. Bui Chi Trung said that the Institute has 28 years of experience in training in journalism and communication in Vietnam. Currently, the main research and teaching areas of the Institute are journalism, communication studies, public relations and advertising. Since 2015, the Institute has implemented 3 courses in the joint Master's program in Media Management with the University of Stirling (UK). The Institute wishes to learn and exchange experiences in this field with Deakin University.

On behalf of the host country, Prof. Michael James Knopp expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. He said that the School of Communication and Creative Arts, Faculty of Arts and Education, Deakin University currently offers a number of related programs such as Bachelor of Communication. The school has modern facilities and resources such as motion capture equipment, digital image editing equipment, film and television production, newsroom, etc. In Vietnam, since 2010, the Faculty of Arts and Education has implemented the 2+2 Bachelor of Communication in Journalism joint program with the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-HCM. According to him, in addition to inviting Australian scholars to lecture, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU-Hanoi can also build a similar model as above with Deakin University.

Deakin University is one of Australia's major public universities, established in 1974 with 4 campuses in Victoria, Australia. The main campus of the school is located in Burwood. The school has 4 faculties: Faculty of Arts and Education; Faculty of Business and Law; Faculty of Health; Faculty of Science, Engineering and the Built Environment. The school currently has nearly 60,000 students, including about 12,000 international students. In 2019, Deakin University was ranked 309th in the world and 19th in Australia by the QS World University Rankings. In addition, Deakin is also recognized as a global leader in flexible courses, allowing students to choose to study on campus, study at home, study online or at work.
