Seminar "Teaching Korean phonetics and vocabulary to Vietnamese people"

The seminar “Teaching Korean phonetics and vocabulary to Vietnamese people”, with the participation of more than 50 domestic and international scholars, took place on August 14 and 15, at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University, Hanoi. This is an activity program organized by the Korea Foundation in collaboration with the Vietnam Association for Korean Studies.

Seminar "Teaching Korean phonetics and vocabulary to Vietnamese people"

This seminar is the third program of the KF Friends Networking project that started in 2013. More than 50 scholars who are working in Korean language education across the country, along with international scholars from Korea and the United States, reported on Korean phonetics and vocabulary teaching, and shared the latest teaching methods.

Sharing before the discussion, Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Jun Dae Joo expressed his encouragement to those working in the Korean language education sector, and hoped that the project to introduce Korean into teaching at secondary and high schools in Vietnam, which is being promoted by the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training, will soon be implemented.

Representing the leadership of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh, Vice Rector of the University, delivered a welcome speech and emphasized: “The teaching of Korean Studies was officially implemented at Hanoi National University, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, right after Vietnam and Korea established diplomatic relations, and has been for 23 years. With the goal of developing the University into a research university, the Korean Studies major of the Faculty of Oriental Studies has been actively contributing to this process, with many proud achievements. The University hopes to have more cooperation from many domestic and international organizations and individuals in an effort to develop Korean Studies training at the University in particular as well as contribute to developing good diplomatic relations between the two countries.”

At the seminar, Prof. Dr. Mai Ngoc Chu, Chairman of the Vietnam Association for Korean Studies, said that currently, the country has 18 training institutions specializing in Korean studies. With the support of the Korea International Exchange Fund, over the years, scientific programs, seminars, and meetings of Korean studies institutions have been held regularly and received support from researchers, lecturers, and students majoring in Korean studies. The seminar included more than 20 presentations revolving around the following contents: Pronunciation characteristics of Vietnamese people learning Korean and teaching plans (by Kim Ji Hyung, International Korean Education Association, Kyunghee University); Understanding the pronunciation of Vietnamese people learning Korean through comparative analysis of Korean - Vietnamese phonetics and teaching plans (Pham Thi Thuy Linh, Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages ​​and Information Technology); Analysis of single vowel phonetics in Korean and teaching plans (Nguyen Minh Chung, Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities); Analysis of teaching pronouns in Korean language textbooks (Lee Yun Jin, Yonsei University); Effectiveness of vocabulary education based on the use of meaning relations (Lee Min Woo, Korea University)...

Along with the Seminar, the organizing committee also organized many other exchange activities between delegates on research and teaching of Korean studies in Vietnam.
