The scientific conference with the theme "Media culture in the integration period" organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in collaboration with the Vietnam Journalists Association took place on February 22, 2012.Attending the event were journalists from press agencies across the country, press managers, journalism researchers and lecturers, students and trainees of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication. The workshop focused on exchanging and discussing the main contents: theoretical issues on press culture - media culture, the two-way relationship between culture and press - media; practical issues on press culture - media in the professional activities of Vietnamese journalists today; proposing solutions to contribute to improving the cultural quality of Vietnamese journalists in the context of mass media globalization. With a multi-dimensional approach and from different professional perspectives, the opinions exchanged at the workshop analyzed and evaluated the current state of culture and press - media in our country. Journalist Ha Minh Hue (Permanent Vice President, Vietnam Journalists Association) in his introductory report stated: Culture and press - media have a close, dialectical relationship. Press is a part of culture, but press also creates and disseminates culture, transmits culture... Therefore, journalists must understand culture, have culture, consider press activities not only as political - social activities, but also as activities with strong cultural characteristics.

Speaking at the opening session, Professor Ha Minh Duc mentioned the issues: the individual and the general, the good and the bad in today's press, pragmatic culture, the press criticizing the negative and the bad in the cultural field. The professor emphasized the change in public tastes today and the media in the integration period must make the cultural values of the nation have a new vitality, a new breath. Veteran journalist Phan Quang said: The press both performs its own duty as a component of culture according to the assigned mission, and joins hands with other types of culture to carry out their mission, contributing to promoting and spreading them to the masses. Therefore, the press and media do not simply do the work of passively transmitting culture but must proactively filter when promoting popular culture, and carefully consider when creating cultural products to serve the community. Discussing the role and responsibility of Vietnamese mass media in preserving and promoting Vietnamese cultural identity in the period of international integration and globalization in the digital era, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong (Head of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication) emphasized: the world is now entering a new era of communication, modern online mass media are continuing to attract more and more users with features of providing fast, comprehensive, direct and interactive information... Therefore, media culture needs to be built on the foundation of values and historical continuity, arousing the public's creativity and serving the public.

Some other opinions at the workshop focused on discussing issues such as: necessary standards of knowledge, skills, professional ethics, responsibilities of those working in the field of journalism - media, the role of press management agencies, human resource training facilities for the press - media industry, etc. This scientific workshop is both theoretical and deeply practical, with practical significance for journalism activities in operations, press management, training, fostering and scientific research.
