History of formation

The Faculty of History is one of the first faculties of Hanoi University of Science, now the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. According to Decree No. 775-ND, dated September 14, 1956 of the Ministry of Education, the Faculty of Literature - History was officially established. Also in 1956, the Faculty of Literature - History was divided into two faculties: the Faculty of History and the Faculty of Literature. From here, great names, great works, bachelor's, master's and doctoral classes were trained in the fields of History and Cultural Studies, contributing greatly to the struggle for national independence, building and defending the Fatherland.

Mission

As one of the key basic science faculties with prestige and long tradition, the Faculty of History has the mission of taking the lead in creating, disseminating knowledge and training high-quality human resources in many fields and specialties in history and cultural studies to serve the cause of national construction and development.

Outstanding achievements

Over 65 years of construction and development, the Faculty of History has had more than 200 staff members working, achieving many important achievements in the fields of training and research in History and Cultural Studies:

  • Creation of the School of Synthetic History.
  • Presided over and participated in many major programs, projects and topics related to Vietnamese and world history and culture.
  • Published more than 6,000 domestic and international research works.
  • Training nearly ten thousand Bachelors, Masters, and PhDs.
  • Awarded the title of Hero of Labor in the renovation period to the Faculty (2000) and to individual Professor Tran Van Giau (2003).
  • Awarded the First, Second and Third Class Labor Medals to the Faculty, many departments and individuals in the Faculty.
  • 06 Ho Chi Minh Awards (Prof. Tran Duc Thao, Prof. Dao Duy Anh, Prof. Tran Van Giau, Prof. Ha Van Tan, Prof. Tran Quoc Vuong, Prof. Phan Huy Le); 04 State Awards (Prof. Phan Huy Le, Prof. Phan Dai Doan, Prof. Phan Huu Dat, Assoc. Prof. Nguyen Thua Hy).
  • International awards: Professor Phan Huy Le received the Fukuoka International Prize for Asian Culture (Japan, 1996), the Academic Palm Medal (France, 2002), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Arts (France, 2011), Honorary Doctor (Docteur Honoris Causa) of the French School of the Far East (France, 2016); Professor Tran Quoc Vuong received the Rockfeller Fellow Award (USA, 1990), The Man of the Year 2000 (ABC, USA), One of the 2000 scholars of the XXth century (IBC, Cambridge, UK, 2000), Grand Elder Professor (Tokyo, Japan, 2000), Typical figure in Asia-Pacific (Asian Pacific Who is Who - India, 2004).

Development orientation

Continue to improve the quality of undergraduate and postgraduate training, focus on building and developing the majors of Cultural Studies and Cultural Management along with a number of new majors on the basis of enhancing interdisciplinary, diversifying training methods, ensuring high quality, exploiting available potentials to adapt and gradually expand the ability to serve politics and society of history and cultural studies; promote academic activities and expand cooperation with universities and research centers in the region and the world.
