Reporter: Dear Associate Professor, Dr. Trinh Cam Lan - Head of the Department of Linguistics, many candidates are still wondering if they register to study Linguistics, what knowledge will they learn in 4 years?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Cam Lan: In the Bachelor's training program in Linguistics, students will gain in-depth knowledge of language theory: phonemes, grammatical structures, word formation, etc.
In addition, in recent years, the Faculty of Linguistics has also regularly innovated the training program, introducing many applied and modern subjects such as: Vietnamese linguistics and dictionary compilation, Vietnamese linguistics with teaching Vietnamese in schools, Methods of teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language; Vietnamese linguistics with editing and publishing; Communication language and social marketing, Journalism language; Presentation skills, Writing skills for print media, Entrepreneurship, Academic writing, Creative thinking and idea design, etc.

To teach these courses, we, on the one hand, use the faculty's teaching staff, and on the other hand, invite experts in the profession to participate in teaching to guide students, helping them best approach working skills and practice those skills right during class.
PV: Can you share more about the scope of application and specific development direction of the Linguistics major at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to meet the practical needs of society?Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Cam Lan: The current scope of application of Linguistics and Vietnamese Linguistics is being expanded to very new fields: such as Computational Linguistics, Therapy Linguistics, Psycholinguistics...
We would like to share some good news with you: The Faculty of Linguistics is preparing to open two majors: Linguistics Therapy and Computational Linguistics, to meet the urgent needs of today's society. Computational Linguistics will greatly support the digital transformation process in the field of linguistics and our language use activities, support the compilation of electronic dictionaries, teaching aids, multimodal language teaching materials (including text channels, image channels, static images and animations, etc.), support the production of increasingly accurate and sophisticated machine translation software, etc. Linguistics Therapy helps train language rehabilitation technicians for children with disabilities or slow language development, for adults who unfortunately suffer from injuries to the articulatory apparatus or the part of the brain that controls language communication activities, helping them recover faster, proactively activating this recovery process to help them quickly integrate into communication with the community.
It can be said that the Faculty of Linguistics is taking steps in the right direction, and the lecturers of the Faculty are also making every effort for a Vietnamese Linguistics industry filled with the breath of contemporary life.
According to statistics, the number of children with language disorders is increasing. Speech therapy for children with disabilities is a difficult job but has profound social and humanistic significance (Photo by Thanh Long)
PV. It is known that students majoring in Linguistics will receive great support from the School and Faculty. So, can you tell us about the support related to the internship program and practical training for students throughout their studies?Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Cam Lan: Each course of students has two internships, one in the third year and one in the fourth year (also known as graduation internship), to help students apply the knowledge, skills, and methods they have learned to their work. Therefore, the Faculty orients students to do internships at facilities that use linguistic human resources such as universities and high schools, research institutes, publishing houses, newspaper offices, radio and television stations, etc. Another advantage is that the Faculty has a Center for Applied Linguistics and Vietnamese Linguistics Practice. In addition to teaching Vietnamese, organizing exams and granting certificates to foreign students, the Center also has the task of supporting the Faculty's students in their research and teaching experiences right at the Center. Therefore, the Center becomes an effective internship facility for students about to graduate.
As for the third-year internship, in recent years, students have been supported by the Faculty with opportunities to intern, experience another culture and language. With a high academic tradition and reputation, the Faculty of Linguistics has a system of partner universities in countries such as France, the US, Australia, Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, etc. These schools often send their students to Vietnam to study at the Faculty. In addition, the Faculty often sends students to intern in close partner countries (China, Thailand, Korea) in the third year. During this internship, students are fully supported by the partner schools with accommodation, transportation and experience the language and culture of the other country, so it is both economical and very useful.
PV: With the above applied training program, what jobs can Linguistics graduates take on, Miss?Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Cam Lan: With knowledge and skills in handling problems of linguistics and Vietnamese, with the ability to apply linguistics to different areas of life, with soft skills trained at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, students majoring in Linguistics are able to work in many different fields such as:
