VNU-USSH: Further strengthening student and graduate student care, affirming and improving training quality

That was one of the key contents emphasized at the training session on the organization and management of master's and doctoral training chaired by the Training Department of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH) on October 3, 2024.

The training session was attended and directed by Associate Professor, Dr. Dang Thi Thu Huong (Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities); Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Thanh Nam (Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the University Council, Head of Training Department) and representatives of leaders and postgraduate training assistants of faculties/institutes/departments.
In his opening speech, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Thanh Nam shared: “In the 2023-2024 school year, the University's postgraduate enrollment and training achieved very positive results, completing and exceeding the target, especially the doctoral enrollment reaching over 200%. The work of considering and recognizing degrees and awarding degrees to new masters and new doctors was carried out promptly and solemnly, leaving a very good impression on students and their families. These results were achieved thanks to the attention and close direction from the University's Board of Directors, the drastic participation of leaders of training units, the efforts of lecturers, postgraduate assistants and functional department staff. However, in the context of many changes in education, new regulations from the Ministry of Education and Training, the governing body; fierce competition between educational institutions, the organization of university training also faces many difficulties and shortcomings. Therefore, today The Training Department proposes to organize a meeting so that all staff involved in the management of master's and doctoral training from training units and functional departments can have the opportunity to share concerns, difficulties and propose solutions to improve the efficiency and quality of postgraduate training at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Delegates attending the training session listened to the staff in charge of master's and doctoral training at the Training Department present a report, in which they especially emphasized some changes in the regulations and latest guidance documents of the Ministry of Education and Training, Hanoi National University related to postgraduate training; some difficulties that students and doctoral students often encounter in the process of completing their thesis defense documents.
Dr. Hoang Van Quynh, Deputy Head of Training Department, emphasized some points to note in the overall schedule of master's and doctoral training at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
Regarding the organization and management of doctoral training, MSc. Le Thi Kim Tan noted: after the decision to recognize students, the training units, based on the training schedule of the School, issued detailed study plans for each month for doctoral students, which is the basis for monitoring the implementation progress, helping doctoral students complete the training schedule and defend on time.
Responding to concerns of training units about the criteria for supervisors, MSc. Le Thi Kim Tan emphasized: In Regulation 3638/QD-DHQGHN dated October 21, 2022 of the Director of VNU, the standards and responsibilities of staff participating in independent supervision, main supervision, secondary supervision and co-supervision are clearly stipulated. Therefore, postgraduate assistants, leaders in charge of master's and doctoral training of training units need to clearly understand all these guidelines to propose a list of supervisors and staff participating in the council, avoiding the situation where incorrect proposals will have to be edited many times, affecting the progress of the PhD student's defense.

MSc. Le Thi Kim Tan also expressed her wish that postgraduate assistants of faculties/institutes/departments as well as unit leaders need to further strengthen the work of caring for learners, warning students about academic matters, supporting and guiding PhD students wholeheartedly so that PhD students can properly implement training regulations, complete thesis defense in the shortest time, with the highest quality.
Regarding the organization, management and training of masters, MSc. Dinh Van Nam emphasized new points in the training regulations, some notes on taking care of students and learners, and minimizing the cases of students who have expired their maximum period according to regulations.

MSc. Nguyen Dinh Trung expressed his hope that training units would pay attention to the progress of completing defense and post-defense documents for students as specifically stipulated in the training schedule to avoid affecting the rights of students.

Speaking at the training session, representatives of training units acknowledged and highly appreciated the professionalism, dedication, and closeness of the department in charge of master and doctoral training at the Training Department. That has greatly contributed to the overall success in the training work of the School, spreading a professional, thoughtful, and humane image of Hanoi Humanities to a large number of learners nationwide.
In addition, representatives of the faculties also openly shared some concerns and proposed solutions so that postgraduate training can continue to achieve more success in the future.

Associate Professor Dr. Pham Hoang Giang, Head of the Faculty of Philosophy, expressed difficulties in implementing regulations on participation in scientific research for students and PhD students working at agencies that do not have to teach or research.

Closing the training session, Associate Professor Dr. Bui Thanh Nam, on behalf of the Training Department, expressed his thanks to the leaders of faculties/institutes/departments, lecturers, and postgraduate assistants for sharing, understanding, and accompanying the functional departments so that postgraduate training at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities over the past years has been carried out in accordance with regulations and with increasingly improved quality.
Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Thanh Nam emphasized: “Sessions like today are extremely necessary, because this is an opportunity for us to share our concerns and thoughts to better understand each other, discuss and propose solutions to remove obstacles in the practice of postgraduate training at each unit. We still have to agree: all training activities must comply with the latest regulations and rules of the state and the governing body. The leaders in charge and assistants of postgraduate training of the faculty need to have a firm grasp and thorough understanding of the regulations and rules to guide learners accurately and clearly. During the implementation process, it is necessary to strengthen the care and support activities for learners, promptly inform changes in the training regulations to ensure the full rights of PhD students and students. The postgraduate assistants of the unit need to be close, caring and provide timely support so that PhD students and students can study, defend their theses, thesis in the most convenient way, on time and with the highest quality".
