Delegation of staff from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU were guests of Facebook Singapore from December 16-19, 2019
The delegation of the School listened to leaders of Facebook (FB) Singapore departments introduce FB activities in the Vietnamese market; how FB builds and develops community standards for users; policies and regulations for handling hate speech and misinformation on the FB platform.
The delegation divided into groups to propose and present ideas for bringing Digital Thinking into universities.
Accordingly, in the past 4 years, there have been 3 countries that have emerged strongly in the information technology sector in Southeast Asia: Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. Facebook has invested 12 billion dollars in these markets. In particular, the market in Vietnam is currently developing very strongly with many opportunities. However, unlike other countries, investment in digital information in Vietnam is mainly focused on businesses - this is a good sign for development.
The whole group had two days of continuous work without rest but also gained a lot of knowledge related to Digital Competency, Digital Thinking - the qualities and skills needed for digital citizens around the world.
In addition, Vietnam has a population of 97 million, with the majority being young - in their 30s. The Vietnamese government is currently investing heavily in technology and the young programmers are on the rise. 70% of Vietnamese consumers use the internet to search for information about products and consumption.
FB Singapore's conference room is spacious and has flexible seating arrangements with writing boards on the surrounding walls.
The survey on "Values of the internet" by FB aims to evaluate the factors: Internet access skills, Internet access conditions, Internet access readiness and Internet usage rights in countries, showing that: Vietnam ranks 44/100, in which the criterion of Internet relevance ranks 10/100, Internet access readiness ranks 24/100 but digital information capacity ranks 63/100. That shows the gap in skills to operate in the digital environment of Vietnamese users.
Group 1 presented on building Digital Thinking subject in university
The areas that FB is currently focusing on are: Digital Economy, Network Security and Community Development. In Vietnam, FB is implementing activities to support businesses to develop, aiming to become global startups, especially focusing on improving the rights and position of women in businesses. FB also helps 3,000 coders in Vietnam connect with the region, encouraging them to share and exchange experiences with software companies and large enterprises - creating connections between software writers and businesses.
Group 2 proposed a solution to integrate knowledge about Digital Thinking into existing subjects.
In the field of network security, in 2006, FB removed 2 billion fake accounts and 90 million offensive images that violated community standards.
Group 3 discussion on topic: extra-curricular activities
In the field of community development, FB has implemented activities to support the staff working on natural disaster prevention in localities of Vietnam, student management staff of the Ministry of Education and Training on how to use and access Facebook utilities; organize workshops in provinces and cities to support skills in using Facebook at work... In 2019, FB implemented the program "Vietnam Social for good" with the participation of famous people to call for gender equality, protect women, condemn domestic violence... In 2020, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Vietnam - US relations, FB plans to implement the program "Facebook for Vietnam" with 05 main content branches: Safety - Communities - Innovation - Cities - Economics. In which, the program "We think digital" - "Digital thinking" is a content in FB's community development activities in Vietnam.
Professor Pham Quang Minh, Principal and Professor Vu Minh Khuong (Professor of National University of Singapore)
FB representative said that the "We think Digital" program has been deployed in high schools in Vietnam, helping to train more than 110,000 students, more than 1,000 high school teachers and they are currently looking for partners to bring this content to universities. FB representative hopes that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities - VNU will be a strategic partner in building the Digital Thinking subject and developing digital capacity in the community. This is the necessary knowledge that FB believes it is responsible for equipping users on the FB platform, including: the operating principles of the Internet and FB; learning the concepts and characteristics of "digital footprints", "digital identities"; identifying potential risks and dangers to users on FB; distinguishing the difference between virtual and real life; learning how to protect information security online; learning how to interact responsibly and respectfully in the digital environment; Make positive commitments when interacting online...
Prof. Vu Minh Khuong shared with the delegation about Vietnam's challenges in developing the digital economy and what Vietnam needs to do to integrate with the world.
The school's delegation discussed with FB representatives and proposed three ideas to bring knowledge about Digital Thinking to the university. One is to build a completely new subject about Digital Thinking and teach it to all students of the school. Two is to integrate Digital Thinking content into some existing subjects at training units. Three is to spread knowledge about Digital Thinking through movement activities, social activities of students, youth and Union - Association activities, towards establishing a student club on this topic.

If the above cooperation is achieved and the School's proposals are realized, Humanities students will have the opportunity to be educated with the basic knowledge necessary to become safe and responsible digital citizens in the global era; opening up other cooperation prospects between the School and a leading social media company and online social networking service in the world in the fields of training, research, community development, etc.
The School's delegation had a very successful business trip with many memorable experiences at the world's largest social networking and online media company.
