With such importance, in recent years, in addition to excavation reports, there have been many conferences and research works related to Dong Dau such as the bookDong Dau archaeological sitepublished in 1983, the bookDong Dau, a typical prehistoric relicpublished in 2010 and scientific conference proceedingsDong Dau Culture 40 years of discoveryandstudypublished in 2003. Not to mention many bachelor's and master's theses based on Dong Dau relics. These works have provided documents and contributed to comprehensive research on Dong Dau relics and Dong Dau culture.
In constructionDong Dau culture ceramic patterns, author Bui Huu Tien focuses on in-depth research on patterns on pottery of Dong Dau culture. In terms of space, it extends to the entire Dong Dau culture, but the research object is limited to decorative patterns on pottery. The author focuses on pottery because pottery is fragile, has a short usage time, and is difficult to transport over long distances, so they clearly reflect the cultural characteristics of each small population in a relatively short period of time. In pottery, the design and decorative patterns both express the aesthetic sense of the individual potter and the spiritual and cultural aspect of the entire community at that time. I think the author has cleverly chosen a small research object, but the scientific issues that emerge are really large and meaningful.

In this work, the author has mentioned many issues about decorative patterns on Dong Dau culture pottery, from creative techniques to classification of pattern designs and their meanings, from economic value to religious consciousness reflected through the patterns. Not only that, the author also compared the ceramic patterns of Dong Dau culture with the ceramic patterns of Thach Lac type, Go Ma Dong - Go Con Lon type, Hoa Loc culture, Ha Long culture, Phung Nguyen culture, Go Mun culture, pointing out the similarities and differences between the patterns of those types of pottery and the relationship between them. And the issues raised are also discussed by the author quite carefully and meticulously.
Author Bui Huu Tien, a person who collaborated with me on the projectDong Dau, a typical prehistoric relicHaving worked for many years with passion, enthusiasm, and seriousness with documents not only on Dong Dau relics but also on Dong Dau culture, I believe that the documents and scientific opinions presented are well-founded and convincing.
For the above reasons, I think this is a very useful and interesting work for those who want to learn about the history of the first period of nation building: the Van Lang period of the Hung Kings and the Au Lac period of An Duong Vuong.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Dong Dau culture (1962 - 2012), I am honored to introduce the projectCeramic pattern Dong Dau culturewith a wide range of readers near and far.
