In 2013, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities had outstanding achievements in scientific research activities, achieving many impressive results in various fields: successfully bidding for 12 State and Protocol topics; many scientific works received awards at all levels; international scientific publications were initially promoted; there were many innovations and creativity in management, teaching and learning activities; many new training majors and specialties were opened to meet social needs; training quality was constantly affirmed with many achievements in quality assessment work... The University increasingly participated more deeply in regional and international scientific forums.

USSH would like to review 10 typical events reflecting the remarkable development steps of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in 2013.


1. Destination of heads of state

As a national university and the leading university in social sciences and humanities in Vietnam, USSH continues to be the destination of heads of state and international leaders.

On September 3, 2013, the School welcomed a high-ranking delegation of the Democratic Republic of East Timor led by Mr. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão - Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense and Security - to visit and work. On October 15, 2013, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China Li Keqiang led a high-ranking delegation to visit and exchange with staff and students of the School. During this visit, the Chinese Prime Minister sent a message: highly appreciating the role of the younger generation in inheriting, maintaining and promoting the good cooperative relationship between Vietnam and China through generations; at the same time, affirming that education is one of the important and priority areas of cooperation, thereby contributing to establishing mutual understanding between the people of the two countries.

2. Receiving staff from two centers of Hanoi National University

With the reception of 21 cadres from the Center for Political Theory Training and Development and the Center for Women's Studies (VNU) to work at the school, the school's staff, especially highly qualified scientific staff, has been strengthened. The school currently has 520 staff, including 88 professors, associate professors and 152 doctors. These numbers reflect that the quality of the school's staff is still at the top of the Vietnamese university system.

3. Proactively develop and successfully bid for 12 State-level scientific projects and Protocols

The University's scientific staff has successfully bid for 12 scientific topics at the State and Protocol levels. This is a great effort and success in scientific research activities since the time of Hanoi National University up to now. In 2013, 03 scientific works of lecturers won the 2013 VNU Outstanding Scientific Work Award; 05 works won the 2013 Vietnam Book Award.

This achievement is the result of innovation in the management of scientific research activities, increasingly effectively promoting the intellectual resources of the faculty, researchers and experts in the School. In addition, the way and thinking of organizing scientific research activities of the staff and scientists in the School have also increasingly changed positively towards a more practical and dynamic direction, and have promoted the role of strong research groups as well as leading experts.

4. First time organizing external assessment according to AUN standards with positive results

From December 16-18, the External Assessment Team of the Association of Southeast Asian Universities (AUN) conducted an assessment of the Bachelor of Linguistics program of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities with positive results. The selection of accreditation according to AUN standards aims to help universities determine which level their training program has reached on the regional assessment scale; detect existing problems that need to be overcome to ensure that the training program meets ASEAN training standards. This is a new step forward for the University in training quality assessment activities to move towards the goal of regional and international integration.

5. Attending the Vietnam - US Dialogue Forum on Religious Freedom in the United States and co-organizing the Training Course on Knowledge of Religious Rule of Law

A delegation from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (VNU) led by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh (Rector) attended the Vietnam-US Dialogue Forum on Religious Freedom in Washington DC on June 19, 2013. The Forum was co-organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Vietnamese Embassy in the United States, the Institute for Global Engagement, and Brigham Young University (USA).

Within the framework of the forum, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh signed a memorandum of cooperation between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Brigham Young University and the Institute for Global Engagement (USA) in the presence of the Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States. In September 2013, the University coordinated with the above partners to organize a training course on knowledge of religious law for more than 100 cadres who are lecturers of universities, colleges and cadres working in religious affairs in the southern provinces.

6. Successfully organized many international conferences and signed cooperation agreements with many prestigious universities in the world.

Dozens of successfully organized international conferences are a highlight in the scientific achievements of the School last year. Not only discussing theoretical scientific issues of the major, the conferences always aim to apply research results to solve practical development problems in localities of Vietnam; at the same time, seek opportunities for international cooperation, create a network of connections and sharing in the scientific community and the world community.

Some typical international conferences are: Conference "Preserving the cultural heritage of ethnic minorities in mountainous areas associated with developing sustainable tourism products in the context of globalization" organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lao Cai; International Conference "Vietnam in world history" organized by the University in collaboration with the Vietnam Historical Science Association and the World Historical Association in December 2013 to publish multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research on Vietnam.

The University's position in foreign relations has been increasingly enhanced through the signing and implementation of cooperation with a series of large and prestigious universities in the region and the world such as: Mahidol University (Thailand), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Brigham Young University (USA), University of Johannesburg (South Africa), University of Politics, University of Education (Taiwan), Korean Cultural Heritage University, University of Glasgow (UK), Meiji University (Japan); funds and corporations such as: AEON Group (Japan), Friedrich - Ebert Stiftung Foundation (Germany) ... Up to now, the University has cooperated with over 180 international partners. Many large international cooperation programs implemented in both the fields of training and scientific research have helped open up new opportunities for scientists, students, and postgraduates to improve their qualifications and integrate deeply with the international scientific and university community.

7. Establishment of the Institute of Policy and Management, a model combining training and research and the first research facility in this field in Vietnamese universities.

On April 16, 2013, the Institute of Policy and Management was established on the basis of upgrading the Center for Policy Research and Analysis, University of Social Sciences and Humanities. The Institute has the function and task of researching and training human resources for management and experts in policy science and management. With the slogan "Proposing ideas - Perception - Innovation" (Think tank - Perception - Innovation), the Institute focuses on creating and applying, linking and gathering a network of policy organizations in Vietnam.

The establishment of the Institute of Policy and Management has made an important contribution to the development of the Department of Policy Analysis and Policy Planning at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, contributing to improving the capacity and skills of human resources in the field of policy science and management, especially science and education management in Vietnam.

8. Signing the handover of phase I of the Investment Project to develop the Center for Journalism and Communication and signing a cooperation agreement with the Vietnam Journalists Association

On July 11, 2013, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a handover ceremony for the in-depth investment project to build a training center for journalism and communication from VNU and a signing ceremony for cooperation with the Vietnam Journalists Association.

The in-depth investment project to build an experimental training center for journalism and communication was implemented in 3 years (2010-2012) at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities to equip the school with a synchronous and modern infrastructure system for journalism training, including a studio, editing rooms, recording studio, online newspaper room, print newspaper, photo newspaper... meeting the standards equivalent to many current press agencies.

At the ceremony, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Vietnam Journalists Association signed an official memorandum of cooperation. The signing of the cooperation agreement between the country's leading journalism training institution and a large political, social and professional organization of tens of thousands of journalists nationwide is expected to bring about positive innovations in journalism training activities as well as professional activities of journalists in the future.

9. Training high school history teachers nationwide within the framework of the international conference "Vietnam in world history"

On December 28, a large-scale training workshop was jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and Training, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the World Historical Association, with the participation of more than 200 high school history teachers from 63 provinces and cities across the country. The delegates listened to leading Vietnamese and international experts present on perspectives and methods of modern history research; research and teaching of Vietnamese history in comparison with world history; skills and methods of teaching high school history; research and teaching experiences from countries with developed science and education... This was an activity within the framework of the international conference "Vietnam in world history" jointly organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Vietnam Historical Science Association and the World Historical Association in December 2013.

10. The 6th Congress of Students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities

The Congress of Vietnam Student Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities took place on March 16, 2013 with the participation of nearly 200 student delegates. The conference listened to and discussed the Summary Report of the Association and Student Movement in the 5th Term (2010-2013) and the direction of work in the 6th Term (2013-2015).

In the 6th term, the Student Association of the University determined to make efforts to diversify activities to promote, arouse ambitions and ideals in students; proactively and creatively implement club forms to improve life skills, integration capacity, professional qualifications, foreign languages, learning and research methods; contribute to orienting the building of a unique style and identity of students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities; and at the same time develop the staff of the Association at all levels. The Congress approved the direction and tasks of the Association's work and student movement in the 6th term with the slogan "Creativity - Connection - Reaching out".
