Towards the 120th birthday anniversary of the great President Ho Chi Minh and the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, on April 17, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Linguistics coordinated with the Vietnam Linguistics Association to organize the 2010 National Linguistics Conference.With the theme “Linguistics and languages in Vietnam”, this scientific conference is a forum for linguists to present their latest research results, discuss issues of interest to them in linguistics, Vietnamese linguistics, languages and cultures of ethnic minorities in Vietnam, Hanoi dialect and the language of President Ho Chi Minh.

There were 157 scientific reports submitted and nearly 200 delegates and researchers from within and outside the country attended the Conference. At the plenary session, after the opening speech of Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu (Vice Principal of the school, co-Chairman of the organizing committee) and the welcoming speech of Prof. Dr. Le Quang Thiem (Chairman of the Vietnam Linguistics Association, co-Chairman of the organizing committee), the Conference listened to and discussed three reports from scientists: -

An early Nom translation of the Ly Dynasty: Selling the "Buddha's Great Repaying Parents' Kindness Sutra"by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tai Can, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Duc Nghieu on behalf. -
Some features of adjective determiners in “Hanoi's Delicacies” by Vu Bangby Dr. Nguyen Thi Nhung, Thai Nguyen University. After the plenary session, the Workshop discussed in-depth topics in 5 subcommittees:
- Subcommittee A: Linguistics and Vietnamese Linguistics
- Subcommittee B: Native and foreign languages
- Subcommittee C: Hanoi Studies and Ethnic Minority Languages
- Subcommittee D: Language and Culture
- Subcommittee E: Language and Literature

Over 40 reports were presented at the subcommittees, many of which attracted the attention and heated discussions of delegates and researchers such as:
Hanoi's current cultural language from the perspective of urbanization(Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khang, Institute of Linguistics),
Corresponding tones of ancient Sino-Vietnamese and Sino-Vietnamese words contribute to explaining the origin of Vietnamese tones.(Prof. Dr. Tran Tri Doi, Faculty of Linguistics, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi),
From culture shock to language interference(Nguyen Van Chien, Thang Long University),
Through a survey of agricultural words in Nghe Tinh, we think about the relationship between occupational words and dialects and national languages.(Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Trong Canh, Vinh University), etc. Many reports by lecturers and young researchers who are master's or doctoral students at universities and research institutes were also presented at the Conference and were highly appreciated:
“Moon” in English and “Tràng” in Vietnamese: A Linguistic and Cultural Study(Le Thi Phuong Anh, Open University);
Comparison of tones in Chinese and Vietnamese(Mong Lam, China University of Foreign Studies and Foreign Trade, PhD student of the Faculty of Linguistics), etc. In recent years, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Linguistics have organized many national and international scientific conferences and seminars on linguistics and Vietnamese linguistics with scientific quality, highly appreciated by experts such as: The 6th International Scientific Conference on "Pan-Asian Linguistics" (November 2004, in collaboration with the Institute of Linguistics), the Scientific Conference on "Linguistic issues: Ho Chi Minh language - Hanoi dialect with Vietnamese language and culture" (November 2007, in collaboration with the Hanoi Linguistics Association), the 2nd International Scientific Conference on "Research and teaching of Vietnamese - Chinese language and culture in East Asia and Southeast Asia" (November 2009, in collaboration with Guangxi University for Nationalities). Speaking at the conclusion of the Conference, Prof. Le Quang Thiem - President of the Vietnam Linguistics Association - highly appreciated the success of the 2010 National Linguistics Conference, especially the scientific quality, academic value, and practical value of the Conference, and thanked the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Faculty of Linguistics for creating all conditions for the success of the Conference.
