The most common theme for World Social Work Day is “Social Work – Making a World Difference” initiated by the International Federation of Social Workers. Through this main theme, countries determine for themselves the appropriate time and theme for each country.

Social work has made and continues to make positive contributions to the effective resolution of economic and social problems and to the assistance of individuals and communities. Social work promotes the social well-being of individuals, groups and communities, strengthens social cohesion at all stages of development and protects vulnerable individuals in the community, and builds cooperative relationships with service users, communities and other professionals.

Social workers assist disadvantaged individuals, families and communities in addressing their difficulties and challenges and have a positive impact on the lives of those individuals and groups. Social workers also make essential contributions to strengthening social cohesion through prevention and intervention programs for social problems. Therefore, social work becomes a useful investment in the present and future of society and communities.

The International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) was founded in 1928. Over the years, it has grown to become a representative organization for social workers worldwide. Today, IFSW has more than 500,000 members in 84 countries. It has been granted special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). In addition, IFSW cooperates with the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and with other United Nations programs in addressing HIV/AIDS and other issues.
