10 outstanding achievements in 2014

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities has closed 2014 with outstanding impressions in all aspects of its activities. Continuing the goal of building a research-oriented university with strong international integration on the basis of constantly improving the quality of training and research, the University has made steady steps and in-depth developments.

10 outstanding achievements in 2014

1. Complete the development of the School Development Strategy and the Science and Technology Development Strategy to 2020, with a vision to 2030. Complete the development of the Job Position Project.

The strategy sets out the basic development orientations for the University in the coming time, aiming to continue promoting the potential and strengths of the university of basic sciences in training and research on social sciences and humanities nationwide; aiming to build a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research university, reaching regional and international levels.

2. Staff with doctoral degrees accounts for 51%, staff with professor and associate professor titles accounts for 25% of the total number of teaching staff.

In 2014, the School had 17 more staff members successfully defending their doctoral theses, 14 lecturers were appointed to the titles of Professor and Associate Professor. The number of lecturers with a postgraduate degree was 329/365 (accounting for more than 90%), including 181 PhDs (accounting for 51%), 06 Professors and 84 Associate Professors (accounting for 25%). This is a high rate reflecting the remarkable development in the quality of the staff.

3. Complete the Project of Planning the School's training sectors and majors by 2020.Continue to deploy many international joint training programs

Accordingly, by 2020, the University will have 38 master's training majors and 32 doctoral training majors. Based on a specific survey of social needs and training capacity of each unit, the Project sets out a roadmap for building new training majors and majors to ensure the reasonable and sustainable development of the University in the future.

In addition, the School continues to implement prestigious international joint training programs such as: Master of Child and Adolescent Development Psychology, Master of Public Administration and Business Management (with Toulouse II University, France), Master of Communication Management (with Stirling University, UK)...

4. Completed the evaluation of the Bachelor of Linguistics program according to the standards of the Association of Southeast Asian Universities (AUN)

With this event, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has taken a step forward in evaluating lecturers’ lectures and assessing training quality according to regional and international standards. Currently, quality assessment and quality culture have become indispensable elements in the training and research activities of the University.

5. Piloting admission based on competency assessment method for high-quality training system, international-class training programs and Master of Social Work major.

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities first piloted admissions based on competency assessment in 2014. This testing method ensures accurate and comprehensive assessment of candidates’ overall competency; at the same time, it promotes innovation in teaching and learning towards improving quality and promoting learners’ creativity. It is expected that this testing method will be officially implemented in 2015.

6. Develop a number of new training majors in Religious Studies, International Relations, Vietnam Studies, History of Vietnamese Religions, etc.

The school continues to demonstrate its pioneering role in opening new majors and majors to serve social needs on the basis of the school's strong basic science majors. Up to now, the school has 22 bachelor's majors, 57 master's and doctoral majors.

7. The organization confers doctoral degrees signed by the Principal.

The new Government Decree on VNU (November 2013) has granted more autonomy to member units, in which the Rectors of member schools have the right to grant and award doctoral degrees to PhD students who complete the course according to the requirements of the University and VNU. At the end of 2014, the first 46 new PhD students of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities received degrees granted by the University.

Along with that, the scale of doctoral enrollment has increased more than 2 times. With the policy of maintaining the scale of university training and expanding the scale of postgraduate training, the University gradually approaches the criteria of a research-oriented university, gradually increasing the research content in activities, and promoting the connection between training and research activities.

8. Continue to organize and implement many large-scale projects and international publications increase sharply.

The number of large-scale research projects has increased rapidly with 14 State-level projects, 17 Nafosted Fund projects, 03 Hanoi-level projects and dozens of University and VNU-level projects. The school's staff have won many science and technology awards at all levels, 03 projects have won the VNU-Hanoi Outstanding Science and Technology Project Award, and 02 research groups have been recognized as strong research groups at VNU-Hanoi level. This shows the strong scientific potential of the staff, the flexibility and initiative in developing research projects and finding funding sources.

This year, international publications have grown strongly with the number of published works nearly doubling. In the 2013-2014 academic year, the University's staff published 44 works abroad, double that of the previous year (23 international publications in the 2012-2013 academic year), including 05 articles published in journals in the Scopus category. This is one of the important indicators to improve the University's research university ranking.

9. Continue to expand international cooperation, sign cooperation documents with 200 universities and international organizations. Successfully organize many large international conferences.

Strengthening international cooperation in depth by signing and renewing 20 cooperation documents with high-ranking partners in the world such as Inha University (Korea), National Taiwan University, University of Glasgow (UK), Korean Institute of Legislative Studies, University of Adelaide..., bringing the total number of international cooperation documents to 200. On that basis, many international research programs and projects with major universities have been and are being effectively implemented, helping to increase development resources and enhance the international position of the University.

Organized 28 scientific seminars and conferences, including 19 international seminars and conferences, with the participation of partners and famous scientists at home and abroad, thereby enhancing the position and prestige of the School. Some seminars have created great resonance in the research community and society such as "Vietnam in world history", "60 years of Vietnam - France - EU", "United Nations peacekeeping forces: international practices and experiences for Vietnam", "From Dien Bien Phu to Geneva, seen from an international perspective" ...

10. Continue to expand the working and learning area in the School

In the last school year, the School completed the renovation of the A building, and also renovated the M building; implemented phase 2 of upgrading the equipment of the Center for Journalism and Communication along with meeting rooms and lecture halls, practically contributing to improving the quality of training, research and activities of the School. Administrative reform according to ISO standards continues to be implemented.
