Exam stress: Identify and cope

That is the name of the discussion organized by the Student Dormitory Center of VNU and the Psychological Support and Counseling Center of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Me Tri dormitory cultural house on the evening of July 2, 2008.

The seminar had the participation of many leading experts in the fields of psychology, nutrition, and mental health in Vietnam. The goal of the seminar was to help candidates relieve psychological inhibitions, recognize, prevent, and relieve stress caused by study and exam pressure, help candidates use study and rest time reasonably, exchange test-taking experiences, nutrition, medical care, etc. to help candidates pass the exam with the best results.

Stress - the most normal story of life

That is the first message that the guests of the program want to convey to the contestants. According to Dr. Dinh Dang Hoe (Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital), "Stress" or "psychological trauma" are events and phenomena that occur in normal life, strongly affecting human psychology, causing negative reactions such as anxiety, loss of composure, sadness, and depression. This is a very normal psychological phenomenon of humans, which can appear anytime, anywhere, and each person experiences stress in different circumstances. Because in life, humans cannot avoid stress, the problem is how we deal with it. Doctor Dinh Dang Hoe gave the simplest example of stress: the cry of a baby when it first comes into contact with the environment outside the mother's womb - an instinctive reaction to the first stress of a human's life.

To a candidate's question "How to live with stress?", Doctor Dinh Dang Hoe gave a piece of advice: "Don't think about the past or worry about the future, think about what you need now. Then you will know what to do to solve your problem.”.

Agreeing with Dr. Dinh Dang Hoe's point of view, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu (Head of the Department of Psychology) also said that if stress is at a "moderate" level, it can still have a positive effect on people. For candidates, a little anxiety and psychological pressure will make them work harder and make more efforts in studying. At a higher level, when facing anxiety in sudden situations, people often have biological manifestations such as: weak limbs, dizziness, lightheadedness, rapid heartbeat, stuttering..., psychological manifestations such as boredom, no more energy to work. "If so, then you need to learn how to regain balance with simple but effective relaxation techniques." - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu shared.

Relaxation - Tips for Coping with Stress

According to MSc. Tran Thanh Nam (lecturer of the Faculty of Psychology), when losing composure in the face of a sudden incident, people will be shocked, tremble, and lose control of themselves. At that time, applying a few quick and on-the-spot relaxation measures, although simple, is highly effective, such as: closing your eyes and counting slowly from 1 to 10, using your hands to gently massage the area around the eyes to relax the muscles, create comfort, ease, and reduce stress immediately.

According to our observations, most of the candidates and parents came to the discussion with a curious but rather shy and unfamiliar mood. However, when being guided to practice the muscle relaxation exercise by Master Tran Thanh Nam, almost everyone participated enthusiastically. The whole hall was quiet, everyone closed their eyes, breathed rhythmically, and relaxed their bodies following the gentle, steady instructions of Master Tran Thanh Nam: “... sit up straight, close your eyes, breathe rhythmically... shake your head gently... can everyone feel a cool stream of water flowing down your neck, to your shoulders?... let's relax our shoulder muscles, like that...”. Just like that, relax, unwind, imagine.... 30 minutes later, the exercise ended. Everyone seemed to wake up. Although the large and quiet hall was not an ideal environment for this practical exercise on psychology and biology, the results were still very positive. A girl named Linh from Phu Tho, when asked, shyly answered: “I feel quite comfortable, thank you teachers and brothers and sisters.”.

Confidence - a factor that stimulates creativity

When the discussion session was more than half over, many candidates sent their questions via paper or boldly asked and asked for advice from experts right in the hall. This shows that the pre-exam stress is quite common among candidates, but clearly they do not have many opportunities to relieve and hear useful advice on this issue.

A question that many candidates are interested in is: "There is always a feeling of not being able to study everything before the exam and this causes anxiety and stress, so should we take advantage of all the time to study day, night, until the exam or not??”. Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu gave advice: Studying is a long-term process and you must prepare for the university entrance exam a long time in advance, right during the learning process at each grade level. Only then will you have confidence in yourself and proactively enter the university entrance exam. If you only have a few dozen hours left before the exam, but you are still in such a state of anxiety, it will only harm you. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu, burying your head in books until the last hours is the wrong way to do it. Instead, candidates should relax and entertain themselves with many extracurricular activities to relieve stress, create a refreshing spirit, and clear mind before the exam.If you keep worrying like that, it will kill your health and spirit." - Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu warned candidates about the risk of studying for exams continuously and without a plan.

A health problem that many students encounter during exam time is dizziness, lightheadedness, and even fainting for a few minutes. In response to this phenomenon, Dr. Dinh Dang Hoe said: if this phenomenon only occurs during exam preparation time and not before, it can also be considered a manifestation of stress - tension due to exams. Dr. Hoe commented: it is because students study a lot for exams without enough rest, leading to fatigue. In particular, studying a lot, sleeping little, not getting at least 6-7 hours of sleep a day is a fairly common phenomenon during exam preparation. Students can only overcome this situation by changing their study schedule, ensuring that the body maintains a normal biological rhythm.

Another interesting question that captured the audience's attention was:How to know if you are confident or complacent before an exam? Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Thu said: Confidence is especially important to bring success to a person in all circumstances. Confidence helps stimulate creativity, giving people passion and inspiration in their work. Confidence helps candidates to ignore conventional ways of doing things that are only loyal to book knowledge to find new and interesting ways to solve a problem, absorb and feel interesting and strange ideas when commenting on a poem. Only confidence can help us have interesting and magical "exceeding standard" moments. However, people are only confident on the basis of real ability, which is the knowledge and experience that have been learned and experienced with a serious, long-term, effective study plan, with a large investment of time and effort. Confident people always determine who they are, where they stand, what they have and what to do in specific circumstances. People who are subjective before exams always think that everything will be achieved easily without much effort. They are always hasty, impatient, ignore the most basic knowledge and never have a specific and long-term plan for their goals. That cannot lead to success.

Nutrition during exam season - something not to be overlooked

[img class="caption" src="images/stories/2008/7/07/img_0602.jpg" border="0" alt="Parents should let their children have normal eating habits during these days (Illustration)" title="Parents should let their children have normal eating habits during these days (Illustration)" width="134" height="200" align="right" ]

That is the advice of Dr. Dinh Dang Hoe to candidates. With 31 years of experience working in the industry, Dr. Hoe said that every year, candidates suffer from vomiting and stomachaches during university entrance exams. The responsibility for this lies primarily with the parents. Also on the issue of eating and drinking, MC Bich Ngoc told a regrettable true story that happened during last year's exam: to congratulate their child on doing well on the first exam, the father and son allowed themselves to drink a few glasses of beer at lunch, as a result, both father and son fell asleep past the exam time and had to put aside their beautiful dream of going to university just because of such an unfortunate mistake.

According to Dr. Hoe, for many candidates and parents, exam season nutrition only stops at eating sticky rice with black beans, green beans, or red beans for... luck, avoiding sticky rice with peanuts for fear of... getting off topic, not eating noodles or pho for fear of being long-winded, drawn-out... "If you can get into university just by eating sticky rice and beans, it's really... cheap." - Doctor Hoe humorously criticized the above misconception. Or another common mistake is that the closer it gets to exam days, the more parents try to find delicious, "unique", nutritious and even... expensive foods to nourish their children. Parents even compete with each other, looking at what other families and people feed their children, then try to find food for their children to eat in the hope of not... losing out to their friends on these important days. But in fact, the results are not as good as everyone expected, and there are even many cases where they are not used to it and even suffer from digestive disorders.

So what is a reasonable way to eat during exam days? According to Dr. Hoe, eating during exam days should be as simple as possible according to the criteria: adequate nutrition, hygiene, especially "Use what is familiar, do not use what is unfamiliar.”. In addition, parents should let their children have normal eating habits during these days, especially eating lightly and moderately, not too full or overeating, which will help the digestive system function stably. That plays an important role in ensuring health during exam days.
