At the invitation of the Cabinet Office of Japan, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and the National Committee on Youth of Vietnam sent a delegation to participate in the 48th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) in 2024.
The program is organized to enhance friendship and mutual understanding between Japanese youth and ASEAN youth. For young people, this is an opportunity to learn and experience different cultures in the region, broaden their vision of the world, improve their knowledge and skills in many fields, and at the same time introduce to international friends a generation of young, dynamic and enthusiastic Vietnamese youth.
Participating in the program, delegates will participate in activities and exchanges on the Nippon Maru ship, Japan and some ASEAN member countries. In the countries the ship visits, delegates will pay courtesy calls to representatives of the host government, interact with local youth, visit offices, schools and some scenic spots, and experience staying at local people's homes...
In addition to the preparation, introduction, and familiarization activities for delegates taking place online on October 20, 2024, the Live Program will last from November 4 to December 11, 2024.
In 2024, the discussion topic was selected from the Implementation Plan of the “Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation: Trusted Partnership”, adopted at the ASEAN-Japan Summit to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation in 2023, focusing on current global issues, as well as the role of youth and students in participating in solving global issues: (1) Soft power and youth diplomacy; (2) Sustainable economic growth and community; (3) Global environment and climate change; (4) Risk reduction and recovery from disasters; (5) Health and well-being; and (6) Digital society.
Being a History major gives me many advantages.
That was Le Hoai Nam's sentiment when he shared his joy of becoming one of the 15 official members participating in the Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) in 2024.
Le Hoai Nam is one of 15 official members participating in the 49th Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Program (SSEAYP) 2024. The Vietnamese Youth Delegation also has a VNU-USSH alumnus, Nguyen Ha Chau Giang (Class 65, Faculty of Journalism).

“When I was a student at the Specialized High School, I learned about this Program through Ms. Mai Mai - a teacher at the Specialized School and she inspired the enthusiasm and super-burning spirit of the VPY (Vietnam Participating Youth) that year. From then on, I dreamed of becoming a member of the Program. So when I entered university, I was determined that during these years of study, I would have to board the Nippon Maru train once in my student life.
With very strict criteria for selecting members, a large number of applicants and most of them were students from the Diplomatic Academy, Foreign Trade University, Foreign Language University, etc. with many advantages in foreign languages, so at first I was quite hesitant. But with my English ability, as well as the knowledge and skills I had acquired at the High School for the Gifted and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, I confidently applied" - Hoai Nam shared.
When asked, “As a student majoring in History, what advantages do you see that you have to confidently apply?”, Nam excitedly shared: “As I said, in the history of this program, the majority of participants were students from the Diplomacy and Foreign Language schools. But this year, there are 5 members from 2 universities of Social Sciences and Humanities in the North and South. I have researched and know that this is an international diplomacy program, so knowledge of culture and history is extremely necessary. Therefore, with my own strengths as someone who loves to learn about History and international relations issues, especially as a History major student at the High School for the Gifted, then a History major student at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, I have studied in depth in this field, so I have tried to demonstrate my existing knowledge and skills in the selection rounds to be able to become a representative of Vietnamese youth. Being an official member participating in this meaningful journey, I I am very happy and proud, because this is not only an opportunity for me to make international friends and improve my foreign language skills, but also helps me broaden my understanding of the field I am pursuing."
“One of the very important “secrets” for me to be successful in this application, in addition to foreign language ability, deep understanding of historical issues, culture, international relations, etc., is confidence and soft skills (presentation, organization, teamwork). These skills have been cultivated and practiced through many Union and Association activities at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities. When I was in secondary school, I was a rather introverted boy with a tendency to study well in Natural Sciences. But a chance brought me to History and I became a student in the History Specialized Class of the High School for the Gifted in Social Sciences and Humanities and I continued to nurture my passion by choosing the History Department of VNU-USSH to study at university. With a systematic, in-depth but very dynamic learning environment here, it has helped me to develop my full potential” – Nam emphasized.

Hoai Nam is very active in Youth Union and Association activities as Vice President of the History Faculty Association.
