The workshop “Soft skills and foreign language training” was organized by the Center for Foreign Languages and International Exchange Promotion, University of Social Sciences and Humanities on April 25, 2009. Many students from many universities attended the workshop and discussed with experts on issues related to how to learn foreign languages and skills needed at work.
The workshop has two main contents:
Experts introduce students to what soft skills are, the benefits and important roles of soft skills in life and work. According to many employers, weak practical problem-solving skills are one of the main reasons why new graduates have difficulty finding jobs. In today's modern and dynamic working environment, in addition to professional knowledge, the ability to integrate with colleagues, negotiate well with partners, handle sensitive situations skillfully, the ability to plan, work independently... are strengths that help you score points in the eyes of leaders, gain the respect of colleagues and elevate your work. However, the training of these skills at universities is still lacking. To equip themselves with this knowledge, on the one hand, students should find opportunities to participate in as many practical jobs as possible to gain experience, and at the same time, they can register for short-term training courses on soft skills at reputable training institutions.
The Center for Foreign Languages and International Education Exchange Promotion also introduces a number of soft skills courses that are currently being held at the Center and attracting the attention of many students such as: communication skills, teamwork skills, crisis management skills, emotional control skills...
Analyzing the main reasons why young people do not learn foreign languages well, experts say that students have not determined what they are learning for, for regular translation, for communication or for professional work... Besides, learning needs to be specifically planned within a certain period of time to achieve the set goals. In particular, to be good at foreign languages, according to experts, there is no better way than to practice every day, in any situation in life and especially avoid the "quick fix" learning style that is rushed for a period of time but then abandoned after a while. Many students also asked questions focusing on: how to practice foreign language test formats, foreign language skills needed for studying abroad, distance foreign language training courses...
