10 typical events of the 2016-2017 school year

Despite many difficulties, the 2016-2017 school year continued to be a year in which the University of Social Sciences and Humanities achieved many achievements in all fields. With the foundation of liberal education philosophy, the entire University determined to implement the strategy of building the University into a leading advanced research university in the country, gradually standing shoulder to shoulder with prestigious universities in the region and internationally. To implement this strategy, the University determined quality as the decisive factor. On the path to quality assurance, the University has identified many key measures such as innovating university governance, promoting communication, enhancing internationalization and enhancing the spirit of service... The following 10 typical events partly reflect the common efforts of the University:

 

1. Professor Phan Huy Le received the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology.

On January 15, 2017, Professor Phan Huy Le was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Science and Technology for his work "Vietnamese History and Culture - A Partial Approach"..This work is considered a breakthrough in theory and methodology in the study of Vietnamese history and culture, highly appreciated by international and domestic scientists; it is the scientific basis for preparing a dossier to request UNESCO to recognize Thang Long Imperial Citadel as a World Cultural Heritage. Up to now, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has had 13 teachers receive the Ho Chi Minh Prize and the State Prize for Science and Technology - a rare achievement among research and training units in Vietnam.

2. The first time aPhD student receives PhD in Science and Technology Management

In order to realize the goal of building a research university, last school year, the University successfully trained and awarded doctoral degrees to 30 graduate students from 15 different majors. Notably, since 2013, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has been the first institution in the country to implement doctoral training in Science and Technology Management and after 4 years, the first graduate student was awarded a doctoral degree.

Last year, the school also awarded Master's degrees to 265 students in 17 different majors. Among them, the major in Vietnamese Studies, which has been taught at the Faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language since 2015, for the first time had a student who graduated and received a Master's degree, and was a foreign student.

These results reflect the School's pioneering efforts in opening new training majors to meet social needs.

The first PhD in Science and Technology Management from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and also from Vietnam is Mr. Hoang Van Tuyen (Ministry of Science and Technology).

3. 42 international publications, including 6 publications in the ISI/SCOPUS journal list and02 monographs in English

During the past school year, the School's staff published 15 monographs and textbooks, including 02 monographs published in English; 603 scientific articles, including 42 international publications (including 04 articles in the ISI system, 02 articles in the Scopus system).

In addition, the University is implementing 17 State-level research projects, 03 Nafosted projects, 25 VNU-level projects and 33 grassroots projects. The University has also established the "Internet and Society" research program and has 03 laboratories invested by VNU.

The results of scientific research activities continue to contribute to providing scientific arguments for planning Vietnam's development policies and strategies. In particular, the trend of international publication is increasingly becoming a top concern in the academic activities of the School.

4. Philosophy isThe third training program is quality-accredited according to AUN standards.

The past year marked the progress of quality assessment. The Bachelor of Philosophy program was assessed according to AUN standards and was the third training program (after Linguistics and Oriental Studies). In addition, the Bachelor of Vietnamese Studies and the Bachelor of Psychology were also assessed according to the standards of the Ministry of Education and Training with good results. The school also conducted peer quality assessment of 02 other bachelor training programs: CLC in History and Bachelor of Sociology. The bachelor training programs of the Faculty of Literature, Faculty of Journalism and Communication, Faculty of Tourism, Faculty of Anthropology and Faculty of Political Science are carrying out procedures to prepare for quality assessment in 2017. Quality assurance activities continue to develop in both breadth and depth, making quality culture a criterion in all activities of the school.

5.Establish two new units under the School and two units under the Faculty

During the past school year, the School also decided to establish 02 new units under the School, namely the Center for Sea and Islands and the Department of Religious Studies; 02 new units under the Faculty, including the Department of Public Policy (under the Faculty of Management Sciences) and the Center for Applied Research and Development of Social Work (under the Faculty of Sociology). The establishment of new units reflects new developments in research and training in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities as well as in the trend of movement and development of the School.

Also in the last school year, 03 staff of the School were appointed to the title of Professor, 07 staff were appointed to the title of Associate Professor, increasing the number of Professors and Associate Professors of the School to 102 (11 Professors and 91 Associate Professors), accounting for 27.49% of the total number of lecturers. The School currently has 152 staff studying postgraduate (142 PhD students, 10 graduate students), of which 28 staff are studying abroad. Last school year, 24 staff successfully defended their doctoral theses, 05 staff defended their master's theses. Currently, the School has 232 staff with doctoral degrees, the percentage of lecturers with doctoral degrees is 60.3%.

The above figures confirm that the work of developing and building a team is always a top concern, considered a prerequisite to enhance the position and scientific capacity of the School.

6.Support from Dao Minh Quang Foundation for Awards, scholarships and scientific research of young staff in the School

In the 2016-2017 school year, the School extended and signed 25 new cooperation agreements with foreign partners, bringing the total number of international partners to 273. In the past school year, the School also welcomed nearly 1,000 international scientists to research and lecture; welcomed more than 40 international delegations, including high-ranking delegations from embassies of countries such as the United States, Israel, New Zealand, Iran, Korea, Venezuela, etc. Notably, among the new partners, the Dao Minh Quang Foundation (Germany) committed to annually supporting a budget of 380 million VND for awards, scholarships and scientific research of young staff, aiming to build a Center for Research and Training Cooperation with Germany and the EU. International cooperation activities help promote the School's activities towards integration, building an academic exchange environment of a highly international nature.

7.Congress of mass organizations in the School

During the 2016-2017 school year, the activities of the Union organizations in the University made their mark with major events such as: from March 24-25, 2017, the 30th Congress of the Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, term 2017-2022 was successfully held, electing a new Executive Committee; on March 18, 2017, the 5th Congress of the Veterans Association of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, term 2017-2022 was well organized; on March 17-18, the 9th Congress of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, term 2017-2019 was also successfully held. These activities demonstrate the intelligence, solidarity and determination of the University's staff and students in carrying out the political tasks of the new period.

8. Former Vice President Truong My Hoa visits the University of Social Sciences and Humanities

On August 22, 2017, Ms. Truong My Hoa - former Secretary of the Party Central Committee, former Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Head of the Club "For Beloved Hoang Sa, Truong Sa", President of Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund visited the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The visit of the former Vice President helped bring meaningful activities of the Club to life.For the beloved Hoang Sa and Truong Sa” closer to the young people. This special meeting conveyed a profound message about the love for the homeland of the sea and islands; about the will to rise up to integrate with the world through science and intelligence; about the aspiration to build a rich and beautiful country and maintain the peace and territorial integrity of Vietnam. Once again, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities continues to be the destination of meaningful activities in the work of education and building political awareness and bravery of Vietnamese youth in the face of the country's major political and social tasks.

9. Student-centered andone stop model

With the relocation of the library to Building M, in the past school year, the School has taken over and renovated the entire 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors of Building E, which has significantly improved the appearance of the School. The entire 1st floor is used to serve students, including the office of the Political and Student Affairs Department according to the one-stop model and open space for extracurricular activities of students, which is highly appreciated. Most of the 2nd and 3rd floors are built into meeting rooms, seminar rooms, and traditional rooms with modern and convenient equipment. In addition, for the first time, the School has decided to renovate the 1st floor of the AB connecting building into a modern canteen to serve the living needs of staff and students.

10. The birth of Master's Tea Club and Lunch Box Club for English

With the aim of improving English proficiency among staff and students, the School has established two English clubs:Master's Tea ClubandLunch Box Club for Englishfor students and staff. The two clubs meet weekly, with specific topics related to study and research. Participants have the opportunity to practice English and exchange expertise with foreign scientists and international students who are teaching and studying at the University. The activities of the two clubs have initially brought a new breeze in the awareness of using English as the key to the University's internationalization and integration strategy.

Master's Tea Club and Lunch Box Club for Enghlish are two English clubs that "broadcast" weekly for students and staff of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
