USSH launches translation of "An Overview of Chinese Culture" by scholar Wei Zhengtong

On May 19, 2017, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities held a ceremony to launch the Vietnamese translation of the book “An Overview of Chinese Culture” by scholar Wei Zhengtong (Taiwan). The book was translated and edited by the staff of the Faculty of Oriental Studies. This activity is within the framework of cooperation between the Ministry of Education and Training of Taiwan and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The book launch ceremony was attended by Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh (Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities), representatives of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hanoi and many scientists inside and outside the University. In particular, the ceremony also had the presence of the author of the book: scientist Vi Chinh Thong - despite being over 90 years old, he still enthusiastically accepted the invitation of the Faculty and the University to appear at the event.

The translation and publication of the book is a cooperative activity between the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Ministry of Education and Training of Taiwan.

The book “An Overview of Chinese Culture” by famous Taiwanese scholar Wei Zhengtong was first published in 1968 in Taipei. In the 50 years since its first publication, the book has been reprinted many times and has received widespread popularity among researchers and general readers in both Taiwan and mainland China.

The book “Overview of Chinese Culture” consists of 11 chapters and 1 appendix, which is considered to have a simple, easy-to-understand writing style and provides an overview of many issues in the field of traditional Chinese culture. Therefore, this book is not only attractive to general readers or the young generation of readers who are just starting to learn about Chinese culture, but also has reference value for readers with a high level of culture but still want to learn more about Chinese culture.

The book covers many different fields from history, culture, literature, art to economics, politics, and society. The author not only discusses the content, characteristics, and influences of Chinese culture in the region and the world; conducts an objective and sharp comparison of Chinese culture with Western culture, but also provides in-depth analysis and comments on the development direction of Chinese culture in the modern period as well as in the future.

The book "Overview of Chinese Culture" not only presents the author's personal interpretations, but also synthesizes many rich historical sources and reference materials, and presents different interpretations compared to similar sources in mainland China.

Scholar Vi Chinh Thong and Professor Pham Quang Minh presented books to representatives of Hanoi National University Publishing House and representatives of students of the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

Commenting on the book, Prof. Dr. Mai Ngoc Chu (Faculty of Oriental Studies) said: This is a lifetime scientific work of a famous scholar. In just over 400 pages, the author has reflected quite comprehensively, fully and deeply into the basic characteristics of Chinese culture. The book bears a clear mark of the author's writing style, academic style and way of thinking.

Scholar Vi Chinh Thong also shared more information about the process of writing the book. He believes that every book, when published, has its own life. He expressed his joy when this work was translated into Vietnamese, reaching Vietnamese readers and hoped that it would also have its own life and position here.

Scholar Vi Chinh Thong and representatives of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office took a souvenir photo with the team of teachers from the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities who participated in translating the book.

Prof. Dr. Pham Quang Minh emphasized that thanks to the efforts of the translation team, scientists as well as those interested in cultural and social issues of China and Taiwan in particular have another valuable scientific work for reference. This is also a testament to the good cooperative relationship between the University and its Taiwanese partners.

AboutScholar Vi Chinh Thong

  • He was born in 1927, Jiangsu - China, in 1949 came to Taiwan.
  • He is a famous Taiwanese scholar and thinker, who has taught at many Taiwanese universities. He is an editor of many prestigious magazines and an academic advisor to the Chinese Philosophy Society.
  • From 1954, under the influence of scholar Lao Si Guang, he began to self-study and write academic works.
  • In 1958, through professional and academic examination, he was accepted as a teacher at a high school in Taichung, Taiwan. In 1974, he retired from teaching high school and has been focusing on academic writing ever since.
  • He was one of the rare scholars and thinkers in China in the early 20th century who became famous on his own, without any formal training or certificates. Taiwanese scholars called him a “folk scholar”.
  • Thanks to his famous works, he was invited by many universities to teach and guide many PhDs, on par with famous scholars in and outside China such as Li Zehou, Fu Weixun, Cheng Zhongying, Yu Yingshi... in discussing issues of traditional and modern Chinese ideology and culture.
  • His learning process consisted mainly of attending lectures on philosophy and culture at Taiwanese universities, with representatives of the two main schools of thought in Taiwan: modern Neo-Confucianism and Liberalism. After thoroughly understanding their thoughts, he stood apart from them, found his own path, which was the path of critical research, and established his own, independent perspective on issues of traditional and modern Chinese thought and culture.
  • He wrote extensively and tirelessly, mainly in the fields of history of traditional Chinese thought and culture, especially Confucianism and its relationship to modern life... He has famous books such as "History of Chinese Thought", "Dictionary of Chinese Philosophy". He had great influence not only in Taiwan, China but also abroad.
