The 2009 postgraduate training conference of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities took place on March 28, 2009 with the participation of representatives of leaders and postgraduate training assistants of the faculties. The conference aimed to evaluate the results achieved in postgraduate training from 2004 to present, to find out the limitations and propose solutions to improve the quality of training.
Implementing the policy of building the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the direction of a research university, the work of postgraduate training in recent years has made important progress in terms of scale, quality, methods and specialized structure. Regarding the staff, the University currently has a fairly large number of permanent and part-time staff with 133 lecturers/533 staff with doctoral degrees and doctor of science, including 7 professors and 55 associate professors. In addition, the University currently has 176 part-time staff with doctoral degrees, including 95 professors and associate professors. Regarding facilities and materials, all faculties and departments have specialized material rooms serving postgraduate training. Many faculties have documentation rooms with a large and valuable number of reference materials such as the Faculty of History, the Faculty of Linguistics, the Faculty of Literature... Besides, although newly established and put into operation, the Museum of Anthropology quickly became one of the interdisciplinary databases that can serve well the work of university training.
Based on the school's resources, in recent years, the scale of the school's undergraduate training has grown significantly in terms of the number of students and the number of training majors. The current number of undergraduate students is 1,864 students, the proportion of the scale of undergraduate training to the total scale of regular training is 25.38%. Currently, the school is assigned to train 27 master's training majors and 29 doctoral majors. The school's enrollment work in recent years has always been carried out seriously and according to the process. The school's admission scores and admission rates are always high compared to other units. Teaching and learning are organized closely and on schedule. The process and procedures for making thesis and dissertation defense documents have been improved to be quick and convenient for students.
In particular, in recent times, the linkage of scientific research with higher education has been well implemented to improve the quality of higher education and strengthen human resources for scientific research. The results of scientific research have become monographs, reference books in higher education, topics, cooperation projects and international conferences associated with higher education, and some higher education students have written theses and dissertations within the framework of scientific research topics.
The school is also the leading unit of VNU in converting to credit-based training. The school has converted 27 master's training programs and 29 doctoral training programs to be suitable for credit-based training. The course content is also adjusted to suit the development of scientific majors and social practices.
The school has opened international joint master's training programs: Master of Organizational Management, Master of Child and Adolescent Development Psychology with Toulouse II University since 2007, Master of Hotel Management with Toulouse II University, Taylor University since 2008. Two international training programs are Master of Vietnamese History and Doctor of Vietnamese History developed by the school and have been assessed and approved by VNU.
At the conference, some limitations of the university training work were also pointed out such as: the scale of university training increased rapidly but mainly master's training, some training majors are not attractive to learners, the implementation of some new training programs in units is still slow, the promotion of enrollment is not good so it has not attracted the attention of candidates; the organization of teaching and learning in some units is not good, many students do not have a plan to do their thesis, do not comply with the process leading to a fairly common situation of overdue, the development of subject outlines and innovation of teaching methods at university level has not received the attention and investment of some staff; attracting students to participate in research topics and programs of the faculty is still limited, some units have not boldly registered to implement training programs under Project 16+23.
The University's training activities in the period of 2009-2014 are identified as the main activities to train high-quality, highly qualified human resources for the school, meeting the requirements of the country's socio-economic development. Accordingly, the school will promote international training links, internationalize training programs, actively switch to credit training methods, innovate teaching and learning methods, innovate training program content...
Some main solutions are proposed:
