Learning to live with information in the digital age
That is the opinion of journalist Huu Tho about the current information situation. The public in the digital age is having to live with a mix of true and false information, good and bad. According to him, in the daily information the public receives, there is always good in the bad, good in the good, fake in the real, fake in the real. Explaining this problem, he said that if the information is all bad or all good, the public will not want to receive it.
This has brought the issue of journalistic ethics in the digital media environment to the forefront of current affairs. The large amounts of information transmitted every second via the internet have made it impossible for people to control the information.
Journalist Huu Tho is speaking at the conference.
According to journalist Huu Tho, the information on the Internet today is often more fake than real. However, the public still has to live with online information. According to him, there is no solution to prevent or eliminate this information on the Internet. The public in the digital age needs to be a public that learns the attitudes to live with this information flow and the information providers - specifically journalists - must set high requirements for themselves regarding ethics and professional qualities.
"The editors-in-chief of today's newspapers no longer have the sole role of reading newspapers and censoring press information. Besides that heavy task, they also have to shoulder the burden of advertising and distribution. Sometimes, advertising and distribution are even bigger worries for the editors-in-chief," said journalist Huu Tho.
Journalist Le Duy Truyen, Deputy General Director of Vietnam News Agency, is sharing his views.
Sharing the same view, journalist Le Duy Truyen, Deputy General Director of Vietnam News Agency, also said that the digital age has led to the explosion of social media. From a certain perspective, social media is not inferior to newspapers in terms of fast updates, rich content and multi-dimensional information. Moreover, the ability to spread information on social networks seems to have no limits, because the emergence of many sharing utilities has turned social networks into "information transmission machines", not limited by human or financial resources. However, the information is not always accurate and objective. This has created pressure on timely counter-information and information to correct public opinion in the press.
Self-responsibility of each journalist
The workshop also discussed many solutions to improve the ethics and social responsibility of the press in the digital age. One of the solutions that many experts agreed on and mentioned was that the first responsibility comes from the journalist himself.
Journalists themselves must always improve their social responsibility and civic duty, ethics and professional skills because these are key factors to help journalists have a steady hand in their work.
Journalist Luong Bich Ngoc, Editor-in-Chief of Kham Pha electronic newspaper, shared: In a journalistic career, there is no journalist who does not make mistakes. There are small mistakes that can be corrected, but there are also mistakes that cost a lot. But the important thing is that each journalist needs to orient themselves to become a decent journalist.
Journalist Dang Dung (Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Newspaper) shared
Emphasizing the personal responsibility of each journalist, journalist Dang Dung, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre newspaper said: "I am often proud of my pen, but sometimes I am also afraid of that pen. When I write a journalistic work, that work will affect many people in society. A small mistake, when not exploiting all aspects of information, I will have to face the regrets of my life. But when engaging in journalism, always be proud of your own pen, writing about the beauty and humanity of life."
It can be said that the press has a special power, the ability to disseminate and impact society every day and every hour, affecting every member and every organization in society. Journalism is not only a simple profession but also a mission because journalism does not exist in and for itself, but exists for and by society. The press and journalists must work for the lives and interests of the majority of workers in society, so they must always aim for true, good, and beautiful values. And therefore, in the digital age, journalistic ethics are always highly valued and require more effective implementation than ever.
