The maximum funding for each research project is 10,000 USD (2,000,000 yen). The application must be recommended by a reputable scientist with relevant expertise. The evaluation board consists of famous scientists from Vietnam and Japan with criteria of fairness, objectivity and transparency.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim assessed the Sumitomo Foundation as one of the prestigious research funding funds in Japan, with high academic standards and professional working methods. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Kim shared some experiences when registering for funding from the Foundation. Accordingly, the research subject needs to have a close connection with Japan, the application must have a clear research orientation and scientific thinking.

The Sumitomo Foundation was established in 1991 by the Sumitomo Corporation, Japan. The Foundation's goal is to contribute to social improvement through scientific research. The Foundation sponsors projects and scientific research that help identify and solve challenging social problems. In Vietnam, the Foundation has played an active role in promoting scientific research and international publications, serving as a bridge for academic exchange between Vietnamese and Japanese scientists as well as the friendly relationship between the two countries. Since 1991, Vietnam has had 131 successful applications and received funding from the Foundation. In the past 5 years, there have been 3-10 successful applications each year. The University of Social Sciences and Humanities alone has had many staff members receive support from the Foundation.
