At the invitation of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong and his wife, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Vo Van Thuong and his wife, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping and his wife paid a State visit to Vietnam from December 12-13, 2023. On this occasion, on December 13, 2023, the wife of the General Secretary and President of China, Prof. Peng Liyuan and the wife of the President of Vietnam, Phan Thi Thanh Tam, visited VNU and had an exchange with students.
Attending the reception for the First Lady of the President of China and Vietnam were Ms. Lam Thi Phuong Thanh - Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Chief of the Office of the Party Central Committee; Deputy Head of the Central External Relations Commission Nguyen Thi Hoang Van, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Ngo Thi Minh.
On the side of VNU, there were Director Le Quan, Vice Director Pham Bao Son, leaders of the Office, functional departments, leaders of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the University of Foreign Languages.
The visit of Prof. Peng Liyuan to VNU is of great significance, creating momentum to promote educational and training cooperation between the two countries, while also creating opportunities for students to exchange, interact and enhance understanding of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and China.

At the reception for the wife of the General Secretary and President of China, Prof. Peng Liyuan and the wife of the President of Vietnam, Phan Thi Thanh Tam, Director Le Quan introduced to the two wives the cooperation situation between VNU and Chinese partners as well as information on training and research in Chinese language and culture at VNU. According to Director Le Quan, VNU has implemented many cooperative activities with Chinese partners in all activities related to training, scientific research and technology transfer. Cooperation activities with universities and research institutes cover all member and affiliated units of VNU. VNU has established partnerships with nearly 30 leading universities in China such as: Peking University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China University of Political Science and Law, Guangxi Normal University and Technical University; Guangxi University for Nationalities; Beijing Language and Culture University; Hebei University of Foreign Studies …
Currently, the number of Chinese students studying at VNU is nearly 600 students, mainly concentrated in the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (nearly 400 students), the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Sciences (100 students) and the University of Foreign Languages (nearly 70 students). Many forms of study are implemented such as short-term training, regular training to obtain a degree from VNU, and cultural exchange programs, graduate student internships.
Cooperation activities to exchange lecturers and staff with Chinese universities have also been effectively implemented. Over the past year, more than 100 Chinese lecturers and staff have come to VNU to participate in teaching activities, improve professional capacity, as well as attend international conferences, seminars and academic exchanges.
Units with strengths in Chinese language and culture training at VNU such as the University of Foreign Languages and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities have actively organized and participated in Chinese proficiency tests (HSK), as well as received Chinese lecturers sent to support Chinese language teaching. In 2023, student Le Nguyet Quynh - a 12E student of the Foreign Language Specialized High School won the second prize in the 16th Chinese Bridge Competition for high school students worldwide held in China.
Regarding scientific research cooperation, the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and the University of Natural Sciences, VNU have had scientific research cooperation programs within the framework of the cooperation protocol between the two countries with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Anhui University of Technology in the fields of high technology and environmental protection. In 2023, along with research cooperation and technology transfer activities, VNU also coordinated with Chinese partners to organize many international seminars and conferences such as: International seminar "Making a difference - social work without barriers, towards sustainable development and responding to emergencies"; International seminar "Research on Vietnamese cultural literature in the context of digital transformation"; International seminar on "Asian linguistic geography" ...
VNU is also one of the higher education institutions, besides undergraduate and postgraduate training programs, there are also 2 high schools that offer Chinese language training, which are Foreign Language Specialized High School and Foreign Language Secondary School. Foreign Language Specialized High School has a specialized Chinese language training system.

Tran Le My - a student at the University of Foreign Languages, VNU, shared her impressions about phonetics while learning Chinese. Le Vu Thanh Thao - a student at the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture, University of Foreign Languages, shared her chance to learn Chinese and her dream of becoming a Chinese teacher in the future.Nowadays, the trend of Vietnamese students studying abroad in China is increasing and many of them choose to study international Chinese education. Perhaps, like me, they believe that through education, we can enhance the understanding and friendship between the people of the two countries. And one day we will become a bridge of friendship, contributing to building a friendly and cooperative relationship between Vietnam and China.", Thanh Thao expressed.
Le Hai Hung, a student at the Faculty of Chinese Language and Culture, University of Foreign Languages, shared that his passion for Chinese language and culture stems from his special love for traditional Chinese costumes. Hai Hung hopes that one day he will have the opportunity to study abroad in China and fulfill his dream of wearing traditional costumes and listening to ancient Chinese songs.
Student Doan Bich Phuong - University of Foreign Languages expressed: "Nowadays, more and more Vietnamese students go to China to study and there are also many Chinese students coming to study in Vietnam. At our VNU, there are many Chinese students coming to learn Vietnamese. This is not only an opportunity to increase friendship but also a great opportunity for us to learn and share knowledge and culture with each other.”.
The wife of the General Secretary and President of China, Prof. Peng Liyuan, expressed her impression of the Chinese speaking ability of VNU students. Assessing that Vietnamese students are very intelligent and hard-working, Prof. Peng Liyuan believes that language is a bridge, playing an important role in communication and connection between people and between cultures. If Vietnamese students know Chinese, they can learn more about China, similarly, if Chinese students know Vietnamese, they will also understand more about Vietnamese culture.
The wife of the General Secretary and President of China, Prof. Peng Liyuan, also emphasized that in the context of China and Vietnam promoting increasingly substantive and effective cooperation, young people and students play an important role. She hopes that the two sides will have many opportunities to exchange and cooperate so that the young generation can promote their capacity and role.
Next, the wife of the General Secretary and President of China, Prof. Peng Liyuan, the wife of the President of Vietnam, Phan Thi Thanh Tam, and the delegates enjoyed the art performances by students of VNU: the T'rung and Flute ensemble performance "My Homeland Vietnam", the singing and dancing performance "Tan Quy Phi Tuy Tuu", writing calligraphy on conical hats with music and reciting poetry, and the solo performance "Hoa Nhai".
Prof. Peng Liyuan praised the performances of students of VNU and said that they not only spoke Chinese well but also had musical and artistic qualities. She also expressed that music is a bridge when the parties do not share the same language. Wife of the General Secretary and President of China Prof. Peng Liyuan advised students to improve the effectiveness of learning Chinese by listening to songs or watching movies. At the exchange, she also learned about the trends of young Vietnamese people today when making videos and posting them on social networking platforms.
