Max Weber (1864-1920), Georg Lukács (1885-1971) and Jürgen Habermas (1929) can be considered three typical figures in explaining the history of the birth, characteristics and prospects of the modernization process of the West, and, in general, of modern society. Around the central concepts such as "rationalization", "disillusionment" (Max Weber), totality (Hegel), "alienation" (Marx),... we have here systems of thinking that both absorb each other and have some differences. While Max Weber had a pessimistic prediction about the loss of individual freedom, G. Lukács still placed hope in an "objective reason" expressed in the consciousness of the historical subject (the proletariat), Habermas wanted to realize reason in "media action" and "civil society". What lessons can be drawn for our society from these observations?
