International workshop on “Preserving cultural heritage of ethnic minorities in mountainous areas associated with developing sustainable tourism products in the context of globalization” organized by the University of Social Sciences and Humanities in collaboration with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lao Cai on November 1, 2013 in Lao Cai.

Attending the workshop were Ms. Ha Thi Nga (Vice Chairwoman of Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee), Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan (General Director of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism), Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Khanh (Rector of University of Social Sciences and Humanities), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa (Vice Rector of University of Social Sciences and Humanities) and many domestic and foreign scientists.

The workshop focused on the main contents: natural conditions, characteristics of mountain tourism and the development of sustainable tourism products; the relationship between cultural heritage and resources for developing cultural tourism and sustainable tourism; models of community tourism, cultural tourism, sustainable agricultural tourism in the world and lessons for Vietnam; the relationship between management agencies, local authorities, people and businesses in tourism development.

The reports not only mention theoretical issues, from the development of sustainable ecotourism based on local knowledge and wisdom to specific tourism models with a new approach, based on the strengths of cultural diversity and natural conditions of the northern mountainous provinces. Not only assessing the current situation, the presentations also analyze and propose solutions on cultural management policies, tourism management, sustainable tourism service models, and solutions to attract community participation in tourism activities.
