Why “summer semester”?
The school's Board of Directors opened the summer semester to give students more opportunities to complete their courses early and best.
Many students have seized that opportunity and traded their leisure time to stay at school and with their teachers. Trung (K56 Tourism Study) shared the reason for summer study: “I am in my final year and have not yet passed the foreign language output standard, so I am taking advantage of this summer study period in the hope that I can graduate in early September. However, choosing to study in the summer means having to put aside all work and plans to arrange time to go to class, review and do homework, and prepare for exams.”
For students in K57 and K58 who are no longer under pressure to graduate, the reason they choose summer school is: “The summer semester gives me more free time, I study in advance, study to improve my grades in some common subjects to reduce the burden for the two main semesters.” Hong (K58 Vietnamese Studies) said. Or Tuyet (K58 Archive Studies) confided: “My house is far away, so this summer I want to stay in Hanoi, to both arrange summer school and work part-time.”

Summer Term: Hot, Wintery and Stressful
These are the difficulties that both teachers and students are facing and overcoming in this summer semester. Mr. Tien (Vietnamese Cultural Foundations Class - History Department), followed the lecture hours, forgetting about recess, he went to class with enthusiasm, eager for the lecture, with the students. When asked about the difficulties, he only complained about one thing: "The weather is hot, turning on the fan does not cool down the heat. That is an inevitable limitation in the summer semester." The summer school period is held from the beginning of July to the end of August, falling right at the time of intense heat in Hanoi, especially this summer, the temperature in Hanoi during the continuous heat waves reached 38 - 39 degrees Celsius. This is truly a challenge for both teachers and students in the classroom.
Ms. Huong (English Class B1 – English Department) was surprised by the number of students in the class because this was her first summer teaching session: “I was a bit surprised by the number of students. I thought the students were just hanging out and didn’t want to come to class so early. But when I entered the class, I saw that almost all English classes were “full” (20 – 30 students/class).”
With a large number of students, the study time is only 7 weeks but the amount of knowledge and lessons still need to be guaranteed to cover the program, so it has caused a lot of pressure for students. The study time of each session is extended, the increase in periods combined with the hot weather easily creates fatigue, the classroom atmosphere is down, student Duong (K58)CLC Literature) said: "Hot weather has a significant impact on health, but the heat also makes the classroom lethargic, reducing the effectiveness of learning in class. Along with that, the pressure of homework and exams coming in droves makes this already hot summer semester even "hotter".
In addition to being enthusiastic and humorous to attract students’ attention, teachers also create many diverse activities such as group discussions, or letting students play games related to the lesson, watch videos, pictures, etc. Therefore, when walking around the summer classes, we will hear laughter coming from the English classes in building C, and even hear singing from the “summer choir” of the psychology class in room G103.
The dedication of the teachers
Summer semester "Easy questions, high scores"
That is what many students when participating in the summer semester hear rumors or whispers from their seniors. The explanation of Mr. Dinh Quang Hung - Training Department: "Still the same lectures, still the same teachers, still the same curriculum, lectures, still the same assessment requirements as the main semester, so there can't be a story of "easier, higher scores". You need to evaluate more objectively". Mr. Tien added: "We still teach the correct program, the questions are selected from the test bank, and graded according to standard answers, so there can't be any preferential treatment in the summer semester compared to the main semester".
That is an affirmation and also a warning for all students who still want to take advantage of the illusion of high scores when registering for summer school. If you want high scores, you still have to try your best for all 7 weeks of study.

This summer K59 "disadvantaged"
This year, K59 started studying the National Defense and Security Education (QPAN) program at Hoa Lac campus for one month. That time coincided with the summer semester (August 2 - August 28). Therefore, K59 could not register to study this summer, which meant that K59 lost an opportunity to improve or study the program in advance. But Mr. Hung consoled: "There is still regret for K59, but if they do not study this summer, they still have opportunities in the following summers. On the other hand, students who do not want to study QPAN this year can still register in the following semesters if they want. The rights and benefits for the students are still guaranteed."
Conclusion
Choosing the summer semester means that you have the opportunity to get ahead of the process or improve your grades, but it also means sacrificing your rest time to choose the hot weather, the pressure of studying and the rush of time. However, taking advantage of and arranging time scientifically can still bring high efficiency to students. The pressure of time combined with the enthusiasm of teachers will also be the motivation for students to overcome major obstacles in the summer semester.
The summer semester (also known as the supplementary semester) has been approved by the Board of Directors to be organized since the first years of credit-based training. The subjects organized in the summer semester are organized in a 7-week schedule. The study time is from the beginning of July to the end of August. On average, each summer semester, including the Internship subjects, the School organizes about 40 classes. The number of students registered for the summer semester is about more than 1,000 students. |
