Based on the exploitation of document sources, the thesis has some contributions as follows:
- Contribute to systematic and comprehensive research and understanding of foreign mining activities in Northern Vietnam in the regional and world context from the late 17th century to the early 20th century;
- Contribute to explaining the basis, objectives, and multi-faceted consequences for the Chinese and French when conducting mining in Vietnam, clarifying the impacts of mining on Vietnam, China, and France;
- Based on some comments and assessments on foreign mining activities in Northern Vietnam, the thesis draws some suggestive historical lessons on the management and exploitation of mining resources, the issue of managing and using foreign workers, and the capacity of Vietnamese people to receive knowledge and apply science and technology;
- The research results of the thesis are a source of additional documents for research and teaching of global history and Vietnamese history.
