With the aim of connecting students with businesses, helping students understand the value of work, the specific requirements of travel and hotel job positions; the Department of Tourism Management, Faculty of Tourism Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU organized the program "Career Orientation Day for Travel and Hotel Industry" for students of the entire faculty on the morning of November 19, 2016.

Attending the program were many representatives of state agencies and private enterprises: Mr. Nguyen Quy Phuong, Director of the Department of Tourism, General Department of Tourism; Mr. Tran Duc Hai, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Tourism; Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Institute of Tourism Development Research; Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen, Executive Director of VieTran tour; Mr. Tuan Anh, Director of Anh Duong company; Ms. Bui Thanh Nhan, Director of Ecosea travel company; Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, Director of Doji Service Business; Ms. Le Viet Ha, Director of Human Resources of Crown Plaza hotel; Ms. Nhu Thi Ngan, Director of Hanoi Tourism company;

On behalf of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, there were Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa, Vice Principal of the University, Head of Tourism Management Department; Dr. Pham Hong Long, Head of Tourism Studies Department; along with all lecturers of Tourism Studies Department and students of all courses.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa, Vice Principal of the School, Head of Tourism Management Department, Faculty of Tourism Studies delivered the opening speech of the program.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa, Vice Principal of the School, Head of the Department of Tourism Management, expressed her sincere thanks to representatives of agencies and businesses who took the time to share and provide career guidance for the School's students.

As a young unit in the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Faculty of Tourism Studies has, through the process of construction and development, trained many generations of students, contributing a significant part to the system of high-quality human resources for the tourism industry in general and the travel and hotel industry in particular. The Faculty currently has 3 departments: Department of Geography and Tourism Culture, Department of Tourism Management and Department of Event Management.

Emphasizing the significance of the program not only for the Faculty of Tourism in general but also for each student in particular, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Minh Hoa shared: "In the current general context in Vietnam, application-oriented training majors in public training institutions are facing many difficulties in terms of facilities. In addition, the training process is still heavily focused on academic and scientific knowledge, lacking professional and career-oriented skills. This requires cooperation and support from businesses, units, and organizations so that students have more opportunities to approach reality."

For students: "Career orientation day is a valuable opportunity for you. To have today's meeting, it is the result of the efforts of teachers in connecting, contacting and organizing. In addition, there is the enthusiastic help of units, agencies, and businesses, although very busy, they have arranged time to come and talk. You should take advantage of this opportunity to learn, ask many questions to be able to draw valuable lessons for yourself.".

Sharing general information about human resources in the tourism - hotel sector, Mr. Tran Duc Hai, Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Tourism shared: "Currently, tourism activities are receiving attention from the Party and the State. This is a comprehensive economic sector with high inter-sectoral, inter-regional and socialization. Currently, the direct human resources serving the industry are about 425 thousand people, of which Hanoi alone has about 88 thousand people. The majority of people working in tourism are under 30 years old (accounting for 60%). This is divided into many fields: state management, direct human resource management in units (about 20%), the rest are human resources in service industries. Professional qualifications from intermediate and college level account for the majority, while specialized training from university and above accounts for only about 9%. According to the 2020 orientation, the demand for human resources is very large, about more than 800 thousand (nearly double compared to present)."

At the meeting, students asked many questions about tourism, hotels, and many questions directly related to internship and collaboration opportunities at businesses.

The guests were also open in sharing, many lessons learned and many opportunities were opened for students in the field of travel and hospitality.

Dr. Pham Hong Long, Head of Tourism Studies Department, spoke at the program.

On behalf of the Faculty Board, Dr. Pham Hong Long, Head of the Faculty of Tourism Studies, expressed his thanks to representatives of management agencies and businesses who took the time to share useful content with the faculty's students.

In a message to his students, Dr. Pham Hong Long said: "Today's students have many opportunities to learn, play and develop themselves through work opportunities. This is an opportunity for them to ask for experiences and find connections with businesses and managers. Take advantage of the keywords learned in today's program to prepare well for the future."

Dr. Pham Hong Long also highly appreciated the Department of Tourism Management, which is the first department to organize a career orientation day for students in the tourism and hospitality industry. This activity will be the premise for other departments in the faculty to organize a series of seminars to promote competition and development of the faculty in the future.

At the program, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen, CEO of VieTran tour, donated 15 million VND to the fund to support students in accessing practical knowledge, contributing to helping students of the Faculty of Tourism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities have more opportunities for practical internships.
