Studying at university requires initiative and clear planning.

Students need to have clear goals.

The learning methods at university have many changes compared to the general education process. Studying at university requires students to always be proactive in their studies, proactive in choosing textbooks, research materials, etc. Moreover, the university environment will create more favorable conditions for students to have opportunities to develop and be creative. This requires students to have clear goals during their study at university.

Sharing with new students, Dr. Nguyen Thu Hien (Deputy Head of the Faculty of Literature) said that studying at university level is more proactive and should have clear goals and plans. Firstly, proactiveness is demonstrated right from the beginning of school, with a readiness to learn about the training program of the major you are studying. Secondly, proactive learning is that before entering any subject, students prepare well for the requirements of the lecturer; preview the outline and documents related to the subject. Thus, students are also proactive and well prepared, so they will absorb knowledge better.

Delegates are participating in an exchange with students.

“The difference is that learning with goals means that each student sets for themselves the output quality or the learning goal to work. Different goals will be the general direction for each of our individual methods,” Dr. Nguyen Thu Hien affirmed.

Answering students' questions about reviewing for exams through syllabuses, Dr. Dao Duc Thuan (Head of the Department of Archival Studies and Office Management) frankly said: "The syllabus is a document required when the lecturer does not provide it so that students have information about the study program within 15 weeks. However, the syllabus is not the only document for reviewing for exams, it is only a document that provides a "skeleton" of a schedule that is more technical in terms of training management and teaching than knowledge. The assessment method at the university level is not only what is in the syllabus but also creativity to achieve high scores."

Many new students asked questions to the guests.

Regarding the study of general subjects, interdisciplinary knowledge, and knowledge surrounding the main subject, Dr. Dao Duc Thuan affirmed that this is supplementary knowledge, equipping students of Social Sciences and Humanities, majors in the future, both in research and teaching. Language barriers, barriers in problem approach, students should proactively discuss with students in class or with subject lecturers, and stick to the standard output outline.

“Love is the driving force for learning. Why not love?”

Those were humorous shares in the talk show, when the guests answered questions about balancing between studying and love when entering university of new students.

Both Dr. Dao Duc Thuan and Dr. Nguyen Thu Hien openly said: "If love is good for studying, why don't we love?" The guests further explained that if we love but forget to study, we will not receive support from teachers and family. Because love is the door to the future, the motivation for both to move forward. Love, like studying, should be built from sharing and support.

In addition, balancing between studying and social activities, including Union and Association activities, is also an issue that receives much attention from most new students. Dr. Nguyen Thu Hien shared her personal experience: “For Union and Association officials who want to spread the word, their academic results must not be inferior to anyone, and their reputation must not be inferior to anyone. Experiences through Union and Association activities are a good launching pad for our students.”

The program attracts many new students to participate.

Sharing the same view, Dr. Dao Duc Thuan said that in addition to Union activities, students need to supplement their knowledge of foreign languages because foreign languages are an important tool to grasp many opportunities.

Along with that, Dieu Linh (Valedictorian of K56, Faculty of Sociology) shared her experience of getting a scholarship by balancing her time between studying and Union activities. Participating in Union activities is an opportunity and motivation for students to strive in their studies. In addition to studying in class, exchanging with classmates and subject lecturers, Ms. Linh also studies at home to practice proactive methods.

Dieu Linh also added: “Students should not label any subject, instead they should apply the theory of the subjects into practice. How to apply the theory into practice of General Sociology, boldly and proactively share with teachers to get answers to questions.”

After more than two hours of exciting discussion, the seminar on Learning Methods at University level organized by the School Youth Union has ended, opening a series of seminars on Learning Methods for each specific field of study that will be organized by the Youth Union branches for their K60 members in the near future.
