On February 5, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU, Hanoi organized an international scientific conference "Promoting people's mastery in the context of international integration, practices of Southeast Asian countries and experiences for Vietnam".

The workshop attracted many scientists from many major universities in Australia such as: Professor John Keane, from the Democracy Network of the University of Sydney; Professor Nguyen Hong Hai, University of Queensland; Professor Jean Paul Gagnon, Australian Catholic University; Dr. Kim Huynh, Australian National University... On the side of Vietnamese researchers, the workshop had the participation of Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh, Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU; Professor Hoang Chi Bao, Central Theoretical Council; Professor Luu Van Sung, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics...

The conference is an opportunity for Vietnamese and international scientists to directly confront, exchange and discuss academic issues surrounding the topic of promoting people's mastery in the context of international integration. The term flat world is no longer new, but somewhere, we still see borders that hinder the development of nations and humanity. To move towards a world and a region of sustainable and connected development, scientists at today's conference should discuss solutions to solve existing problems, bring nations closer together, and develop, Associate Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU emphasized.

This conference is also very important, because 2015 is the year that Vietnam has many important events, such as: Organizing the 85th anniversary of the founding of the Party; Organizing the 40th anniversary of the reunification of the country. In the coming time, it is also the period when the Communist Party of Vietnam will organize a Congress, to determine the direction of development in the coming time. This will raise many issues for domestic and foreign scientists to discuss and research.

The workshop took place over two days with eight reporting and discussion sessions. The content of the reports and discussions revolved around the following issues:

Asia and Democracy includes the following papers: Francis Fulkuyama's Challenge to the Theories of Democratization; National Sovereignty and Popular Sovereignty; Democracy and Human Rights in the Process of Historical Development; Towards a Southeast Asian Democracy; From Thailand to Vietnam: The Democratization Process and Its Consequences for a Developing Country.

The issue of Democracy in Vietnam was divided into 3 sessions, with 15 presentations directly from many domestic and foreign experts. Some reports presented at the workshop were: Implementing democracy and promoting people's mastery in innovation and international integration in Vietnam; Perfecting the institution of implementing democracy in Vietnam today; the basis of the political ideology "people are the root" in Vietnam; Civil society with the implementation of the role of people as masters...

Dr. Jean Paul Gagnon, Australian Catholic University, is presenting a paper on "Defining Democracy: The Asian Context"

The discussion session focused on the topic of democratic aspects in Asia, with presentations such as: Representative democracy and Confucius' political thought; Democratic models in Indonesia, 1945-2014 - From Parliamentary Democracy to Command Democracy, Pancasila Democracy and New Democracy; Singapore's experience in fighting corruption and suggestions for Vietnam; Some changes in the political institutions of the Southeast Asian region.

The topic of political institutions and democracy was divided into 2 discussion sessions, with about 10 reports presented. The presentations revolved around a number of issues such as the Vietnam Fatherland Front and the issue of regime building; State institutions of ASEAN countries, the ideology of a state of the people, by the people and for the people from the 1946 Constitution to current practice; Agricultural production with the social structure and behavioral culture of Southeast Asia;...

The fifth topic, in the 6th discussion session, revolved around the issue of media, technology and democracy. The presentations at the workshop revolved around issues such as: Technology and the power of laxity: A perspective from China; The press and the formation of public space in Vietnam: history and present; Solutions to promote people's mastery in the current period of international integration in Vietnam; The role of political media in promoting democracy in Vietnam today;...
